Penny Marshall dead at 75, best known as TV's Laverne and director of 'Big,' 'A League of Their Own'

Bronx-born Penny Marshall, who found ‘70s sitcom success on “Laverne and Shirley” before stepping behind the camera for Hollywood hits like “Big” and “A League of Their Own,” died Monday night at her California home. She was 75.

“Yes she did (die) … peacefully at her Hollywood Hills home,” said her publicist Michelle Bega. “She passed away from complications from diabetes.

Marshall’s triumphs as a director broke new ground in the male-dominated movie industry, and she became the first female director to score a $100 million gross with “Big” in 1988. She turned the financial trick again with “A League of Their Own” four years later.

But she directed only one feature film after 1996, and kept a low acting profile with cameo roles in films like “Get Shorty” and “Blonde Ambition.”

“Penny was a girl from the Bronx, who came out West, put a cursive ‘L’ on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story,” said a statement from her family, referring to the monogrammed wardrobe of Marshall’s blue-collar protagonist Laverne De Fazio.

...

I can’t recall her spouting any political opinions so that’s a plus.

Her role as Myrna Turner, Jack Klugman’s secretary in The Odd Couple, was classic.

It’s endlessly shown on DirectTV channels.

It’s one of about a dozen movies my husband and I notice are ALWAYS showing. Includes Overboard and Patriot as well as several others. I enjoy most of them but I can only watch it so much!

Always remember as a kid enjoying the rerun cycle of “Laverne and Shirley” whenever it was in the midst of the good old days of when they worked at the Shotz Brewery in Milwaukee and hung out at the Pizza Bowl, as opposed to when they later moved to California to work in a department store and Laverne’s TV dad owned the western themed bar.

She is a liberal and I know she is for abortion. However, she was not in your face type of liberal like her ex Meathead. Nor have I heard her speak ill of anyone let alone a conservative.

I loved Laverne & Shirley because it was a funny show not just for funny remarks but also having physical slap stick skit. I think the closes was I love Lucy.

RIP Penny, I pray you have come to know the Lord.

And Lenny and Squiggy need to get to Radio Shack before they close to pick up some rosin core solder.
Figure that one out.

OK, this is weird. I was JUST TODAY thinking about her when on SiriusXM the song from the series intro came on. I never even knew it was actually a released hit from the 70s (on 7).

RIP, nice Lady.

She was one of Mary Richards’s neighbors (a nurse) when Mary moved out of her studio apartment in the house to a regular apartment. Her character dated Lou Grant briefly.

RIP Penny.

‘The Patriot’ is the one and only movie I’ve watched from start to finish...then watched it all over again that very same evening!

It really got to me. :)
