Why drug testing at work 'is the new don't ask, don't tell'
Washington Post ^ | Dec. 21, 2018 | Jena McGregor

"We've been reporting year-over-year increases of the positivity rates for almost all three of these illicit drug classes," he said, referring to marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines. "As we break it out by industry we're seeing a number of industries with those same results." Still, the rate of growth stood out. The retail industry, for instance, saw a 43 percent increase in positive test results for cocaine between 2015 and 2017, Quest's analysis showed. And eight sectors saw at least 20 percent increases in positive marijuana test results over the same period, as more states loosened laws restricting the drug... "Absolutely, I think in positions where there is a labor shortage right now and employers are looking for candidates for jobs that don't have safety-sensitive issues or aren't federally regulated [to require testing], I definitely think employers are eliminating drug testing as a whole when it comes to hiring applicants," she said.

There's something seriously wrong with Americans with this much of an increase in drug use.

I would never hire anyone who tested positivie for drugs. Nor would I hire someone who had tattoos that couldn't be covered up. Don't bother asking for a job if you can't English and don't have the proper identification.

Why are those who do the testing not tested?

I’ll soon have a CDL which requires me,under Federal law,to submit to periodic drug tests as well as “spot checks” which are random and announced on short notice. While mandatory drug/alcohol tests may not be reasonable in some employment situations they certainly are in others...including the ones that I’ll be subject to.

Why are those who’s decisions directly affect tens of millions not randomly tested, such as those in Congress?

Why are judges, who’s decisions can directly affect the lives of thousands of others, not randomly tested?

They could test public school teachers.

But we’d probably have to place about 80% of public school teachers.

These days we’re at the point where someone has to take a drug test to work at a pizza place, or a Subway sandwich shop.

That’s an interesting question. Judges aren’t tested, but cops are.

What’s the point in being a trucker if you can’t snort crystal meth off a Molly Hatchet CD cover?

I don’t do drugs but I notice:

Little People have to do drug tests, Big People don’t.

Why aren’t there such tests for members of Congress or high-level bureaucrats and Judges..? Public school teachers oversee HUNDREDS of little kids, yet they are never tested.

A baseball player is hauled before the kleig lights, people screaming to know if he did steroids.

Schumer..?

He could be doing lines every day and we wouldn’t know it.

One country, TWO systems.

I don’t think the majority of cops are randomly tested. In fact, those who make serious decisions over the lives of millions of others like school teachers, judges, Congress, the Senate, the President etc, are NOT randomly tested.

Not arguing with you at all, there is something seriously wrong with Americans for sure. I hate weed with every fiber of my being. Despise illegal and many legal drugs just the same.
That said, these drug addicts are 100% limiting themselves by choosing drugs over better jobs. And yes the feeling that weed and other drugs give you is addicting, no matter what dope-heads try to tell anyone.

"I don’t hire people who can’t English."
When a cue ball is struck on either side of its vertical axis, giving it “side spin, that's called "English" in billiards. It may also occur when a ball collides with another or with a rail. The term comes from the British players who first became famous with sidespin techniques
all proffesional biliards players should be proficient in English

I think the obsession with drugs as the cause of every accident and mistake is fascinating. Especially in light of the fact that the drug Alchohol has caused more death and destruction over the course of history but is absolutely OK.

Most IDIOTS are absolutely drug free

You have to know the base rate before you can assess whether or not the percentage of increase is reason for alarm. Unfortunately, the article is a little short on detail. This is the only information in the article that you can get some feel about the magnitude of the positive drug testing for illegal drugs:

“Some 5.3 percent of tests given to retail trade workers, and 4.7 percent of those given to health care and social assistance workers came back positive, according to an analysis by Quest Diagnostics.”

Unfortunately, there is no link in the article to the Quest study, so it is not clear whether these numbers already include the 43% increase Quest is reporting or they are the base rate that the increase is being added to. If we assume worse case (being added to), the revised rates would be 7.36% and 6.7% respectively.

Viewed another way, about 93% of applicants apparently are testing drug free. That’s not exactly “America’s going to Hell in a hand basket” territory.
