Why drug testing at work 'is the new don't ask, don't tell'
Washington Post ^ | Dec. 21, 2018 | Jena McGregor

"We've been reporting year-over-year increases of the positivity rates for almost all three of these illicit drug classes," he said, referring to marijuana, cocaine and methamphetamines. "As we break it out by industry we're seeing a number of industries with those same results." Still, the rate of growth stood out. The retail industry, for instance, saw a 43 percent increase in positive test results for cocaine between 2015 and 2017, Quest's analysis showed. And eight sectors saw at least 20 percent increases in positive marijuana test results over the same period, as more states loosened laws restricting the drug... "Absolutely, I think in positions where there is a labor shortage right now and employers are looking for candidates for jobs that don't have safety-sensitive issues or aren't federally regulated [to require testing], I definitely think employers are eliminating drug testing as a whole when it comes to hiring applicants," she said.

They could test public school teachers.

I knew a public school principle, a friend of my brothers. He was constantly doing coke and pot and beer.

I already filled a small container during my pre-employment physical.I'm not as sure of the specifics as you are but I'm not worried. The only consciousness altering substances I ever introduce into my body are found in the Hostess Cupcake aisle of the supermarket.

Yes,I lead a very boring life.

“Why are those who do the testing not tested?”

They are, regularly.

Just like cops, public school teachers, Congress, Senators, judges etc, etc...All these people make decisions over the lives of many others.

And none are randomly drug tested.

Not to mention doctors and surgeons...None of them are randomly tested either.

You said ‘those that do the testing’, and they are regularly tested. Those that do the testing are in at medical clinic.

There's something seriously wrong with Americans with this much of an increase in drug use.

The overall increase in drugs of all types is exactly what the experts have been predicting. The legalization of marijuana - the gateway drug - is leading to increased drug use of all types.

There are countless drug testing lab facilities where those who are doing the testing are not randomly tested. I know, I had to attend a meeting once where they were going to contracted with entities to test their people. In the meeting I asked those from the lab if they tested those who were preforming the tests, and I was told no, and in fact the question angered those who were from the lab at the meeting as they responded, “No, they’re not driving heavy equipment and were not in a position to cause harm to others”.

No joke.

I don’t use alcohol or other drugs. Can’t stand either.

What does that have to do with billiards? Would drunk people understand it?

Thank goodness, pot isnt a gateway drug. These folks are simply lying about the cocaine and other drugs. We know the increase in neonates with incredibly high levels of pot in their umbilical cord is Freedom Baby.
We have arrested the war on drugs and look at all of the freedom we received in return.
Just wait about 4 years when these babies who were bathed in drugs in the womb get to school.

I say we test all government employees, including Congress.

That would get rid of at least 80% of the scum.

“I had long hair, surprise,it was always me who was chosen for the random drug test.”

Ha ha, brings back memories. I discovered a year after I took on a new professional job that my boss actually lost about 100 1980’s dollars to his peers when he bet against me on passing a drug test when I was hired!

“...Alchohol has caused more death and destruction over the course of history but is absolutely OK.

It is definitely not OK if you are driving, operating machinery, and so on. I’m actually in favor of more severe penalties for driving drunk. In the age of Uber, there really is no excuse for it. People in Europe get faced all the time, having a designated driver or by using public transportation.

Most IDIOTS are absolutely drug free.”

True. But if you are being paid to do a job, is it really too much to ask to show up sober/not stoned, or being the least stupid that one can possibly be?

I was injured twice (one of those times I escaped serious, life-changing injury with a combination of young reflexes and luck) by stoned co-workers. I’m all for personal freedom - until someone loses a hand or worse - because someone else didn’t follow procedures, being too screwed up to do them properly.

I don’t know how businesses handle this in “legal pot” states. The real problem as I see it is there is no legally set, scientific, repeatable test to determine if you are “stoned”, unlike the situation with alcohol.

Just about the only thing I LIKED about Illinois is that they had a concept of “contributory negligence” with car accidents. If you weren’t wearing seat belts, you could get your medical bills paid, but not jack sh.. for pain and suffering, because YOU contributed to it. Maybe this concept could be used in the inevitable industrial situations with drugs.
