He did visit a private home that was quite nice. But I got the impression, perhaps wrongly, that no matter how nice a rich/middle class person’s home/neighborhood might be, right around the corner there will be the filth and squalor seen in Slum Dog Millionaire.
There are a billion more people there in 1/2 the area of the US. You can go from first world to slums in a matter of minutes...that is true.

And no, it hasn't had any famines since it got its independence (which tells you how famines are caused mainly by bad government policies - Ethiopia is another example where, when they tossed out dictatorship, their nutrition levels rose). They are among the largest producers and exporters of food products globally
Abandonment of girl BABIES is a problem - more like ABORTION of them and more like only in the north (Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh) - while in the south the sex ratio is a normal 102+ women to 100 men.
