The Iranian navy will send warships to deploy in the Atlantic from March, a top commander said on Friday, as the Islamic Republic seeks to increase the operating range of its naval forces to the backyard of the United States, its arch foe.

A flotilla will leave for the Atlantic early in the Iranian new year, starting from March, Iran’s naval deputy commander said.

“The Atlantic Ocean is far and the operation of the Iranian naval flotilla might take five months,” Rear-Admiral Touraj Hassani was quoted as saying by the state news agency IRNA.

Hassani said in December that Iran would soon send two to three vessels on a mission to Venezuela.

Do they have any experience operating their fleet units for up to 5 months at a time? Given they've always operated relatively close to home I doubt they've ever had cause or need to practice underway replenishment. I wonder where they've made arrangements to make port calls for food, fuel, spares, etc.

The Persian Gulf is not a great operating environment for US SSNs...however, if/when they venture out into more blue water, that's the SSNs playground. They'll face a threat in it's natural environment, though I'm fairly certain they'll never know it, unless one of our subs is ordered to rattle their chain a little...

You seriously posted that and never knew that this isnt the first time Iran has done this?

It’s called international waters.

And like what is that stupid boat of theirs going to do? We have 50 year old jets that have a greater range than that.

"Meanwhile on Free Republic, many support Iran by constantly demanding we get out of the Middle East."

I for one would love to end all of our involvement in the Middle East. However I realize the Iranian threat, especially since the Shrub broke the biggest counterbalance to the ayatollahs, Saddam and Iraq.

Yup. We’ve been there long enough and we know how to get back there if needed.

An Iranian war ship operating off New York is one less to be destroyed off the Straights

However, that does not alter the facts about isolationists that refuse to acknowledge that Iran is our mortal enemy

If we insisted on war in the middle east, Bush should have taken out Iran, the root of terrorism all over the world.

Axis of evil, baby. We had Iran surrounded with troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Didn't the Democrats pass some bill forbidding any kind of attack on Iran? Regardless, it was Iraq who spent 8 years at least locking onto our planes and threatening WMD attacks and since the first Iraq war never technically ended, the US had more of a legal case for going after Iraq. All water under the bridge now. We don't nation build, remember? We'll have to harden ourselves to seeing children gassed and people burnt alive in cages. We no longer can afford to nation build. Oh well. It's a tough old world, snowflakes.
