Shutdown could delay your tax refund, but you may still have to pay

The government shutdown could delay your tax refund this year, but if you owe the IRS money, then you may still have to pay on time regardless.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that the Internal Revenue Service is one of the federal agencies without funding and is being run with one-eighth of its normal staffing as the government shutdown continues.

While the IRS does conduct some business during shutdowns, it generally does not issue refunds, answer taxpayer questions outside the filing season or conduct audits. The Treasury Department considers these non-excepted activities during a shutdown and positions that handle these are furloughed.

Ah yes, tax payers must still pay taxes while the government is shut down. It is nice to know that WE are considered “essential employees.”

The media will be doing all it can to find ways the “shutdown” will be inflicting pain.

Anyone who is getting a tax refund is an idiot! Why would you make your government an “interest-free loan!” The IRS isn’t a Savings Bank!

People should arrange their exemptions so they aren’t owed a refund. It isn’t a windfall, but your money that the IRS has withheld that they weren’t entitled to. Of course, without withholding, people would be more reluctant to “send it in”. Who can forget that first ever paycheck? “What the **** is FICA?” Actually I enjoy seeing that reaction on a youngster. I see him/her as a future conservative.

So the Deep State is suffering too from the shutdown? That’s a win-win!

A better question is what happens hiring when the IRS won’t process those W-2’s but you’re still on the hook for hiring someone with a bad SSN.

I always marvel at people who love getting a tax refund. They act like its a gift from the government.

I have a “better” idea for all those libs (the ones that love illegals but won’t leave their stuff laying around for the taking). Send the IRS a memo/letter/text/tweet/instagram/email letting them know that ‘until the government shut down is ended you refuse to send in your taxes’. Go on and do it. It could help end the shut down. ;-)

“Shutdown could delay your tax refund, but you may still have to pay”

the real trick is to always owe a little bit, anyway ...

Right on brother. When people I worked with would say woo hoo I am getting over a thousand back I’d say “you ought to think about the thousands they confiscated from your paycheck all year long”. One of the most monstrous things FDR did was get the Federal Witholdng through. If people had to come with the money for the taxes at the end of the year they would burn DC to the ground.

If you know what your refund is going to be, just change your withholding to add 20 more exemptions, and tell the IRS to keep your refund for next year.

When you are behind in withholding equal to the amount of your refund, you fix your withholding back to normal.

This way, you pay yourself your refund.

If I did it right, I should owe them about a hundred bucks.
No way I want them holding on to MY money and not pay me interest....

Ideally you would want to have a zero balance, but due to the complexity of the tax code its impossible.

WIth my savings account interest at 0.1%, it hardly matters.

With my tax situation changing wildly every year, I’d rather get money back, than have to write a big check and risk an audit or getting charged penalties and interest (which are higher than what I’m getting on my savings).

But yes, the entire idea of a “refund” reflects a profound ignorance on the part of a vast majority of the people who live in our country.
