Nobel's former secretary, Geir Lundestad, told the media that he thought giving Obama the award would spur him to great accomplishments. Instead, Obama did nothing of note over the next eight years.

The official citation says "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples", so it was awarded for things the selection committee thought he already had done.
