Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton has introduced a bill to make the District the 51st state.

H.R. 51, the D.C. Statehood Bill, was introduced by Holmes Norton on Thursday, the day that the 116th Congress was gaveled into session.

“I have a commitment that there will be a hearing on H.R. 51 from our good Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Elijah Cummings that this bill will get a prompt hearing and then, of course, go to the floor,” Holmes Norton said in a video posted to her official Twitter page.

Another screwball idea from the House Democrats. This one goes with abolishing the Electoral College and impeaching President Trump.

They will have to amend the Constitution to do it. A DC Statehood Amendment was reported out of Congress to the states for ratification in 1972, but it expired in 1979 with very few ratifications.

Any state that host the seat of Federal government would have an enormous advantage over the other states. This will never be allowed. It is the primary reason why the founders created the District of Columbia. It serves no other purpose.

The ancient dead white patriarchy decided the district wouldn’t get representation. It’s an outmoded way of thinking from hundreds of years ago. — liberal justification coming up. Count on it.

Eleanor Holmes wants a “state” instead of a district so that she won’t have as much trouble parking and hitting others’ cars.

Ridiculous. The seat of our national government should not be wedded to a single state and be expected to fairly represent all states. (Even if Wash DC doesn’t care for fairly representing the country, it would be worse if made a state.)

You can’t Constitutionally subdivide states. D.C.’s land came from Maryland and Virginia?

We don’t need two more lunatic senators from DC. I’d be more in favor of declaring DC a seditious territory and setting up an American-style Nuremberg tribunal.

I would be good with returning the land to Virginia and Maryland and having our capitol rotate among the 50 states every congress.

Originally, but the Virginia portion was "retroceded" (returned to Virginia) in 1846.

This and the proposal to eliminate the Electoral College is all part of the socialist democrat attempted coup. They want to nullify the constitution so they can become a one-party socialist state.

They forget that our inalienable rights to liberty, free speech, to keep and bear arms, to consensual government, etc, are granted by God and pre-date the constitution. The Founders spelled out the remedy for runaway tyrannical government in the Declaration.

Both proposals would require constitutional amendments. That means that two thirds of the House and two thirds of the Senate would have to approve and send it to the states for ratification. Then three fourths of the states (by their legislatures) would have to ratify. That isn't going to happen for either proposal.

This is just virtue signaling and kowtowing to their radical base.

The Virginia portion was returned to Virginia more than a century ago. DC, as it currently exists, all came from Maryland.
