Dallas Morning [News] Schadenfreude
Texas Scorecard ^ | January 7, 2019 | Michael Quinn Sullivan

Posted on 01/08/2019 11:44:22 AM PST by JeepersFreepers

The irony is delicious. For the last four years the Dallas Morning News has been on a jihad against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Over their boisterous objections, Texans re-elected Paxton in November. And today it was announced they were slashing their “newsroom” by 40 employees.

It seems Texans just don’t want to pay for the leftist garbage produced by the once formidable Morning News. Over the last two decades the content has become more and more shrill, and not just the editorial page. The “news” – like the fact-free tales produced by liberal activist Lauren McGaughy attacking Paxton – reads more like Democrat Party press releases than actual journalism.

And that’s the problem with the crusading leftists at flailing legacy publications. It’s not that they are liberal, it’s that they are liberal and pretend they aren’t. Like the emperor walking naked down the street, the “mainstream” media loudly proclaims the beautiful morality of their bias-free journalistic cloak while everyone snickers at the tattoos proclaiming love for Hillary, Beto, Obama, and Nancy.

Even as the DMN’s “news” pages marched more to the beat of the establishmentarian left, the opinion pages for a brief period reflected the old publication’s ever-so-slight right-of-center editiorial lean. Very briefly. They pretended in print to support free market economics… while endorsing extreme leftists for office like the aforementioned Hillary, Beto, and others. Yes, they occasionally endorsed conservatives, but usually only when endorsing anyone else would expose them to further ridicule. But most often their endorsements have given the talking points for why Texans support the not-DMN candidate.

In recent years, the DMN editorial page has read like a poor man’s Mother Jones or New York Times.

Quite honestly, the far-left Texas Observer has more credibility than most “mainstream” publications. The Observer wears their bias for all to see, making themselves an honest pervyor of information. A reader knows exactly how to filter what they are reading.

Frankly, it’s false to apply the moniker “mainstream” to cratering publications like the Dallas Morning News. There is nothing mainstream about these publications, or else they wouldn’t be slashing their newsroom. Their readership represents a small and shrinking percentage of the population. One wonders how many of the DMN’s remaining subscribers simply don’t want to waste the time it takes to cancel delivery of a product whose highest use is lining their birdcage.

And for all that, the Morning News has been producing a substandard product. If they had more integrity, if they embraced their biases, if they reflected their community, if they actually delivered a product people wanted to read, then the Dallas Morning News and the rest of the dinosaur media might not be facing extinction. The market still wants news; for example, Texas Scorecard is hiring.

We’re not supposed to rejoice in the travails of others, but leave it to the Germans to have given a name to that guilty feeling – Schadenfreude. But I think it is entirely justifiable to be glad when you get to see the market deliver economic justice to a business that has proven itself to be a bad actor and a worse corporate citizen.

Meanwhile, after celebrating his re-election Mr. Paxton is heading toward judicial exoneration.

Democrats continue using the legal system as a weapon to target staunch conservatives such as Attorney General Ken Paxton. Even the Wall Street Journal identified the case against Paxton as a "political prosecution." The mainstream press has joined in with the left in excoriating Paxton. Now they are paying the price.

Lie with dogs;
get up with fleas.

The Indianpolis Star has likewise been ruined by being Borged by Gannett.

The Dallas Morning Snooze shot themselves in the foot by endorsing Hillary Clinton in 2016. That’s when many subscribers decided they did not need another Democrat media source.

People don’t need newspapers any more. All their ‘news’ comes prepackaged on their computer screens, tablets and smartphones.

I’m surprised that the Dead Tree Media is still in existence.

Even the Want Ads and Car and Grocery store ads are diminishing.

Our local rag is just a shadow of its former self. Very thin papers during the week and Sunday’s paper is what the daily used to be, and the price keeps going up.

Dallas News is just the latest to figure this out.....................

Oh, great. Now that they’re coitus-ing with Gannett, we can’t post their stuff anymore. Not that I would necessarily want to.

I cancelled the DMN some 10 years or more ago. Just garbage, and I could get the comics on-line, Dallas Cowboys from DallasCowboys.com, etc.

I stopped the DMN 20 yrs ago when my kids were little. They insisted on putting the comics in the “lifestyle” section, which often ran articles on the “wonders” of the gay lifestyle. They asked why I quit and I told them. Glad to be a little cog in the machine to grind them down.

Why not? They are only using Gannett to publish/print their
crap as I read it. They were using someone else.

When I moved to DFW in the mid 1990’s, I subscribed to the Morning Snooze and the Startle Gram to help learn about the area. The old joke about Fort Worth being about where the West begin and Dallas is where the East peters out was very evident.

I was at the TX state fair about 10 years ago. Walked by a table where a young woman asked if I wanted a free subscription to the Dallas Morning News. I don’t have a bird or a bird cage, why would I need a liner? She looked kind of stunned. The wife just snickered....

It wasn't always that way.

When I lived and worked in Dallas in the 80’s, the StarGram was the liberal rag and the Morning News was a reliable conservative newspaper. Sad to see the DMN go to liberal borg. It is not sad to see that it's liberal demise is imminent.

“People don’t need newspapers any more.”

Well, yes and no. I enjoy reading the newspaper, but they are all horrible now. I would also like a source for local news, but our city paper and all the local TV local news shows are left wing crap. They spend a lot more time bashing Trump than they do reporting local news. It’s infuriating.

I stopped getting the DMN when they did two things - they did a horrible job reporting on the Branch Davidians and they put two gay “in love” guys on the front cover of the wedding section.

Our little local fish-wrapper in Idaho Falls is barely surviving mainly due to its insistence on promoting left-wing ideology...the paper seems to think it is the WAPO of eastern Idaho...a region that votes overwhelmingly for conservatives and strongly supported President Trump.

I once asked the editor why the paper refused to reflect the values and politics of its readers? He said the paper was obligated to show how politically wrong people are in the paper's distribution area.
To which I said, that 'splains why you are running around pimping for subscribers.
