ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis newscaster has apologized for what he called an unintentional racial slur while referencing Martin Luther King Jr., nearly two weeks after the same phrase cost another broadcaster his job.

KTVI-TV's Kevin Steincross said during a Thursday morning broadcast that an upcoming tribute would honor "Martin Luther Coon Jr." Steincross apologized during a later broadcast, saying he has "total respect for Dr. King, what he meant and what he continues to mean to our country."

KTVI says managers spoke with Steincross and believe the phrase was inadvertent and not reflective of his "core beliefs." Vice President of News Audrey Prywitch says no additional discipline is planned.

That weren’t no accident . . . only what’s in the heart can come out of the mouth. This person is fond of saying it in the presence of her friends, and she forgot that everybody ain’t her friend on live TV. Dang!

“Vice President of News Audrey Prywitch says no additional discipline is planned.”

Yeah, we’ll see about that. People have been destroyed for far less. Prywitch probably putmhis own head on the chopping block with that statement.

A “gaffe” is when you inadvertently say what you really think.

The Greaseman was suspended at WWDC in 1986 for a bit involving MLK and the number of days off. Yeah, buddy.

Doug Tracht also got fired and basically blacklisted back in 1997 (if I recall the year correctly) when, commenting about how a Black female singer sounded, he said, “No wonder they drag them behind trucks.”

In 1999 (Again, I believe that’s the right year), he tried to get a gig on a Carribean island, and the locals threatened to riot if he got the job.

Those same words were used by George Lincoln Rockwell, the neo-Nazi in an interview with Playboy back in the 60s, IIRC.

Yep, I am intimately familiar with the whole affair. The thing is, Grease is not a racist - he really was an equal opportunity offender. The problem was he apologized so profusely and effusively that they just crucified him.

The way out of a mess like that is to apologize IMMEDIATELY and sincerely:

His actual legal name was Michael King. “Martin Luther” was an alias to shroud him in the religiosity of an actual theologian. He was a serial adulterer who plagiarized his doctoral dissertation.
“King first studied communism on his own while a student at Crozer Theological Seminary in 1949. In his 1958 memoir, he reported that although he rejected communism’s central tenets, he was sympathetic to Marx’s critique of capitalism, finding the “gulf between superfluous wealth and abject poverty” that existed in the United States morally wrong (Stride, 94). Writing his future wife, Coretta Scott, during the first summer of their relationship, he told her that he was “more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic.” (Papers 6:123; 125).”https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/communism

Post of the day.

How do you get from “King” to “coon” unless you practiced?

King to Kong maybe, related, start with “K”.

Coon Arthur? Elvis, the coon of rock & roll? Richard Petty, the coon?

Carol Coon? “It’s too late, baby”.
