Haha, the Grease! After that, nothing else much to do but repair to the library with a bottle of scotch, velvet smoking jacket and my William Holden drinking helmet...

We used to take a THE ARKANSAS FARMER magazine 60 years ago in which the editor ranted, raved and used the same term about Dr King.

How do you get from “King” to “coon” unless you practiced?
= = =

Consider this -

Newsman’s mouth just said Luther, sounds like Loooother, phonetically.

Then has to change mouth from ooooo shape to King, iiiii shape which is kind of a tongue twister, especially for a Newscaster (paid script reader - brain off, just spout those words smoothly out your mouth).

Try it. Loother, then King, and note the abrupt mouth shape change.

I think Loother Kooong might just slip out.

I lived in Chicago during the '70s and I remember frequently hearing Martin Luther King Drive referred to as Martin Luther King Kong Drive.

That'll probably get you ass 86d today too.

This was reported a few days ago.

Apparently he got confused and started to say "Junior" before saying "King"--Martin Luther Junior King--but stopped after just the first syllable of Junior so it sounded like "coon." But that was not what he was attempting to say. Of course because he is white the worst possible interpretation is taken to be the correct one.

I listened to first guy say this, and it seemed like an accident to me. Words get twisted, especially when speaking fast. There are people across the country, thousands of them it appears, who are trying to destroy anyone they can. When the the consonants at the beginning and the end of a word (or near the end) are the same, it can happen that someone says the wrong word. It DOES NOT mean someone is a racist, or says racist things usually. I can’t imagine what this country has become.

I have said Martin Luther King’s name thousands of times over the years in conversation and was raised in the deep South where that type of verbage was not uncommon, and not once did I ever slip up and use that word in saying his name.
