 This should get us started...

The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations,
 all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States.
 
To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

Much better. Grant was a general, though. He did what he could to win the wars he was ordered to fight in. I don’t see much indicating that he got us into foreign wars when he was president.

I agree a land war in Asia would be as disastrous as one can imagine but with every passing day and every exponential advance in digital technology, such a war contemplating masses of troops is increasingly unlikely.

I think a future war with a putative superpower foe like China will be conducted in space and in cyberspace rather than on geographical turf. The casualties on the homefront could be as bad as are to be expected in nuclear war, which is not to be excluded, but the days of confronting armies in battles are drawing to a close when it involves major powers with highly sophisticated technology. Imagine the devastation if our electric infrastructure is destroyed at the stroke of a keyboard!

As we move into this brave new digital world we must ask ourselves, are we preparing for this upcoming new style of conflict more akin to Star Wars than to blitzkrieg?

If we spend billions on an aircraft carrier and billions more on support ships and yet billions more on personnel, their health care and retirement, do we make ourselves safer or more vulnerable? If we conduct brushfire wars which drain our resources and sap our morale because they profit us nothing, are we safer or weaker? If we hollow out the middle of America, if we passively accept the destruction of the middle class, if we trade away our manufacturing base, will we be able to successfully wage any sort of war? If we do not get our deficits under control and become economically unsound, can we compete in the technological age? If we lose our identity, if we lose the vision of ourselves as that City on the Hill, do we leave ourselves naked and vulnerable to terrorism and intimidation and, ultimately, disintegration?

These are the considerations that we ought to be debating and the idea that Ulysses S Grant provides a historical insight into the answers is somehow just plain silly.

One century, four score and seventeen years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in another civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
