Almost one in three New Yorkers would face higher costs under a proposed single-payer health plan, and half of the worse-off group would be low- or middle-income, according to a new report from the Empire Center.
The report highlights little-noticed data from the RAND Corporations analysis of the New York Health Act, which estimated 31 percent of New Yorkers would pay more for health care under single-payer.
Among those paying more would be almost half of the working poor....who already qualify for free or near-free coverage through Medicaid, Child Health Plus and the Essential Plan. Many beneficiaries of those programs have jobs, and if they pay even a small amount of payroll tax, they would see a net loss.
For New Yorkers with employer-sponsored insurance, the report estimates the income tipping points at which single-payer taxes would exceed current premium costs. For single workers with no children, the tipping point would be income of about $78,000; above that amount, they would typically face higher costs than they do now....
Single payer is not only high-risk but enormously expensive, requiring massive tax hikes and heavy spending that would inevitably crowd out other priorities for state government. The vast majority of the expense would be devoted to imposing an alternative health plan on people who already have coverage.
New Yorks uninsured rate has dropped to a historic low, putting the state within reach of near-universal coverage...
Instead of contemplating radical, experimental surgery, state lawmakers should focus on health-care reforms that are measured, affordable and targeted to those who need the help.

It’s not the 31%, they could care less about the minority who have the money. It’s the 69%, those who want things for free.
The 31% will have to pay for the 69%
Only 31% would pay more? That is not a good number in politics. Single payer here we come.
BS it is much much higher then 31%.
Just tell the voting public how little of their income they are “entitled” to keep.
What percentage pay to start with. Only about 50% pay any income tax.
Well someone has to pay for free healthcare for Illegals
roger that. And the amount of how much more they would pay is vastly more than current estimates. That's been the case every single government program.
and 100% less care.
31%? Is that before or AFTER the Citizen/biz exodus??
That 31 pct of the people will equal 98pct of tax revenues.
That is probably 98 pct of their tax base.
If you like your plan you can keep your plan.
Flip side:
Report estimates 69% of New Yorkers would pay less under single-payer health plan
When one is robbing Peter to pay Paul; they can most ALWAYS count on Paul’s support.
That 31% wouldn’t have to pay for it. That’s why they want it and that’s why it won’t work.
