“Martin Lucifer Coon” was the epithet used by a rival of Robert Shelton’s United Klans of America. It was in a series of Life magazine articles in the summer of 1964 about the civil rights movement in the South. He used a microphone & bullhorn PA to shout his remarks.

It was a night rally complete with torches & Confederate flags. OTOH, the Klan was careful to display only the national colors at their `events’.

I don’t see how the term, “coon” was part of a mispronouncement, i.e., a mistake. I just don’t see how. On that assumption, I would have fired him/her, too.

It is an easy tongue trip up K sound as in King and the first syllable of junior. King and June = coon.
