The Senate's top Democrat is introducing legislation to "hold China accountable" and sanction laboratories and other traffickers who export fentanyl to the United States.
The bill, which will be introduced by Sen. Charles Schumer, of New York later this week, is likely to add to growing tension between the U.S. and China, days before Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will lead high-level trade talks in China.
In December, China agreed to label fentanyl, the deadly synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of American drug deaths annually, as a controlled substance.
Schumer's legislation known as the Fentanyl Sanctions Act would direct U.S. officials to publicly identify foreign opioid traffickers, would deny the traffickers visas in the U.S. and would prohibit them from doing business using American banks.

Yapping from the back seat.
Shut up Chuckie. The adults are talking.
If the “Rethuglicans” had done this to Obama, the Democrats would have howled about unAmerican sabatoge.
This makes no sense.
Just trying to throw a wrench into Trump’s China negotiations.
Keep fentanyl away from babies..it could kill them.
China sees supply of fentanyl and its production inputs as pay back for Opium Wars and "The Hundred Years of Humiliation".
Pic shows the Chinese view of the carving up of China by UK, France, Russia, Germany, Japan.
Makes sense that Schumer is trying a Nancy Pelosi move, trying to show up PDJT at a critical moment. Trouble is, Mitch can (will he?) shut Schumer down before such a bill gets to the floor. Say, postpone it so it will not interfere with executive prerogatives in conducting foreign policy.
There’s always an angle to what the Rats propose. It may sound like they’ve come to their senses but there’s a catch or buck to be made somewhere.
It makes no sense because it is either legal or illegal to import the drug.
This is confusing in terms of what crime is being addressed and the use of “sanctions” as opposed to criminal penalties.
Um, maybe he could TIGHTEN UP THE BORDER? IIRC, a massive Fentanyl shipment was discovered in a truck driven by a trusted driver. The shipment had the potential to kill 56 million people.
I thought the Chinese had done something to make fentanyl illegal, or shipping it illegal, or something.
Schumers maneuver has nothing to do with Fentanyl and its dangers. It is only an attempt to derail trade talks with China.
Schumer has made a deal with the devil to combat President Trump.
What about the drugs we get from Mexico?
Exactly.
“It is only an attempt to derail trade talks with China.”
I am sure the Chinese are sophisticated enough to know that Schumer is just an ankle-biter.
Trump has been working on the opiate issue since he took office. China did make it harder for those producing fentanyl at least on paper. The dems are seeing progress on this issue and they want to be able to claim credit after ignoring it for the last decade or so. Republicans are no better, but they will ride Trump’s coat tails.
Yes it makes sense.
The usual commiedemonratscumbags play book. Create, Lie about it, Obfuscate, Bitch, Piss and Moan, Blame, create a new Department, Use new Department to obtain funding, begin siphoning funds to Swiss and Other Banks outside America.
Well, considering that a lot of pharmaceuticals are manufactured in China these days, that could certainly roil negotiations over drug prices (to the benefit of big pharma). Also, Fentanyl has legitimate uses. How are the Chinese supposed to be able to determine who is legitimately requesting this drug and who is not?
Might be better to gain their cooperation and set up some sort of registry of shipments coming in. That way we’d know who is getting what.
