Commentary: Why the Illinois exodus? The rich get bashed, and off they go
Chicago Tribune ^ | Jan. 28, 2019 | Kristen McQueary

Posted on 02/11/2019 11:05:50 AM PST by george76

A recent compatriot to the Illinois Exodus: A 25-year Chicagoan who sold his 2-bedroom, 2½-bath Lincoln Park townhouse in early January at a $30,000 loss. He’s moving to Indiana.

“Like thousands of others, I tired of the one-party system, rising pension debt, no change to the current pension system, increasing property taxes (mine doubled), increasing crime and soft approach to criminals,” he wrote to me.

Politicians tend to be flippant about people like him. Who cares about one less yuppie in Lincoln Park? Be gone, whiner. Chicago’s political class, most of the mayoral hopefuls, the Illinois General Assembly and several high-profile members of the newly-seated U.S. Congress routinely devalue the contributions of working professionals and, yes, people who make decent money and invest it smartly. Shaming successful businessmen and entrepreneurs — read, Republicans — is the new mafia squeeze play. Conform to the mob or else.

...

The number of residents fleeing Illinois for other states jumped to 93,704 in 2014 from 68,204 the previous year. It increased in 2015 to 106,544, and in 2016 to 109,941. More exodus in 2017 of 114,779 and last year, another 114,154.

Who do you think is leaving Illinois? For the most part, it’s people who have the means to do so.

Which brings us to the broader problem: How did we get to a place where wealth, success and entrepreneurship are shame-worthy? And where giving back by these same individuals is largely ignored?

Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts often becomes folly for the income-equality crowd. Yes, he’s a rich guy. Yet due to his generosity, thousands of kids on the South Side can enjoy a new indoor sports center

...

This is just one of many, many examples of high-income earners giving back. You don’t hear about it enough, though.

Illinois loses the equivalent of the entire population of the town we live in every year.

Every single year. That’s the net number.

We will soon be among them.

The debate over “the rich fleeing” is a false one. Its not about “the rich.”

America’s wealthiest people can go wherever they like, or like Jeff Bezos, buy political protection as needed

States like Illinois high taxes fall on the middle-class and workers. THEY pay all the high property taxes, sales taxes, payroll deductions, insurance schemes, gas taxes, license fees all foisted on us by leftist politicians looking to redistribute wealth through their own hands.

I think Illinois is in the worst shape of any state. New Jersey is a close second. If you live in Illinois, my advice is get out now. Sell your house. Sell your business or take another job. Do it before the excessive regulations and coming tidal wave of taxes crushes your business and causes a truly mass exodus. That will crush your home value too.

Illinois has chained itself to the Titanic after it hit the iceberg. Its going down. There is no way to avoid all the massive pension obligations to public sector labor unions. Those will never be cut until every last other resource has been exhausted trying to pay them. That means you. The politicians are coming directly for your wallet even more than they are now - and soon. Leave now with as much of your net worth still in your hands as you possibly can.

To save the Republic, America needs a government debt and currency crisis - and soon.

I will enjoy watching Illinois politicians deal with insolvency

At least twice a month for the past 2 year I’ve had headhunters calling me to consider positions in CA, MA, NJ, NY, and Il. I tell them every time that I’m not interested in East/West Coast or the commie step-child of the Midwest because of taxes, cost of living, and over-regulation.

The usual reply I get is something along the lines of: ‘yeah, I’m hearing a lot of that’ or ‘yeah, the locals are looking to move out as well’.

I know businesses are moving as well, but I don’t think they’ve reached the rate that the people have. Eventually I don’t think they are going to have a choice if they want to find employees.

The California companies are moving here and bringing the skinny pants, nose ring vermin with them.

saw this yesterday:

https://www.mystateline.com/news/illinois-lawmaker-files-bill-that-would-make-chicago-the-51st-state/1769769111

Chicago will never go for it because under the current bankruptcy code municipalities can file for bankruptcy, states cannot.

What you said it absolutely true... but the recent hubbub is about the still very vague proposal by the IL governor to raise taxes on “the rich” to cover a multi-billion dollar hole. The thing is, there is no number they could impose on a ‘marginal rate’ that is practical. They would either double the tax on people making $1M or more, or they have to raise taxes the middle class, or some combination of both.

For perspective, in California the highest rate is over 13% on incomes over $1M, and in the 11%-12% range for incomes between $300k-$999k. They’re talking about double those rates in IL.

“Problem is they create the same atmosphere wherever the move to.”

Which is Einstein’s definition of insanity. Sometimes I think liberals would rather set themselves on fire than admit they are wrong and conservatives are right.

It’s not about ideology nor has it ever been. It’s about creating permanent power through creating a permanent majority electoral base that will reelect the elites forever.

I mean, at some point did Chavez or Maduro pause & say, “Holy cr@p, we are RUINING Venezuela!! We’d better scale back some of this socialistic garbage or we will impoverish the entire country!!!”

Nope, not a chance. As long as power is preserved, that’s the sole objective. How ironic that it wasn’t just Marie Antoinette who said, “Let them eat cake!”

(She didn’t say that, but the rumor sent her to the guillotine.)

Too bad for Illinois. Yet another mostly rural state ruled & ruined by the leftist politics of one megacity. I once drove the whole length of Illinois by interstate & back again. A beautiful state.

You are absolutely right. Smart people with valuable skills and/or assets are too smart to move to cazy liberal states. Productive and affluent people know well which states to avoid. Its all about the quality of life for them and their families.

Not the downstater. I will be gone within a year and know quite a few conservatives who plan on doing the same.

Mike Royko once arrogantly stated that without Chicago, Illinois would just be another Iowa. Please throw us in that briar patch.

They're talking about raising "income tax" on the "rich".

Wait until they start pushing a "wealth tax". That's where the real money is.

One Dem running for President is already doing that. E. Warren I believe it is. Her proposal is something like 2% for anything over 100 million.

But of course it wouldn't stay that low for long.

Over time it'd be half or more of the value of everything you own and three quarters of anything you leave as an inheritance. It's coming folks, almost certain.

Refinance your house to 100% and walk away. Easier than selling. Selling in Illinois is getting hard.
