As the national debt hits $22 trillion, these are the only people trying to cut spending

The national debt hit $22 trillion this week. You won’t find many in either major party who think this is a healthy development.

But isn’t part of the reason people vote Republican because that party presents itself as fiscally responsible compared to Democrats?

For as long as the debt has grown, Republicans have been promising to stop it. Yet, in 1981 the national debt topped $1 trillion after former President Ronald Reagan’s first year. When former President George H.W. Bush left office in 1993, it was more than $4 trillion. His son, former President George W. Bush, would push it past $10 trillion.

Of course, Democrats were just as responsible for exploding the debt. President Barack Obama became the biggest government spender in world history, leaving office with an almost $20 trillion national debt.

That is, until our current Republican president outdid Obama in spending. When asked about a looming debt crisis in December, President Trump replied, “I won’t be here.” To his credit, Trump has shown some spending concerns, like his call for every agency to reduce operations by 5 percent in October.

But has anyone in Washington actually cut spending?

Yes, and not surprisingly they are all Republicans. Sadly, there’s only seven of them: Sens. Rand Paul R-Ky. and Mike Lee R-Utah, and Reps. Justin Amash R-Mich., Thomas Massie, R-Ky., John Duncan Jr. R-Tenn., Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, and Morgan Griffith, R-Va.

These findings are according to SpendingTracker.org, a project of the bipartisan nonprofit group the Coalition to Reduce Spending. SpendingTracker takes the annual votes of each member of Congress and measures how much is spent or cut through those votes, without exception. Amash was the biggest saver in Congress last year, voting to cut $165 billion in 2018.

But still, only seven?

Here is a couple of numbers I saw this year. Total US spent on services to illegals annually 89 billion. California 21 billion.

It’s collusion between media and Democrats. All the Democrats have to do is to say “no” and Trump (and the Republicans) get all the blame.

Did that help us? Yes.

Did it add to the deficit? Combined with the increases in spending, yes.

I think we’ll see some great numbers coming down the pike.

We're running trillion dollar deficits now, when the economy is going full speed and unemployment has literally never been lower. What will deficits be like once the next economic downturn hits?

Which would mean that additional tax cuts would result in reduced revenue?

If they (rates) stay the same we will see next year.

I live in Cal and vote for no bonds or tax increases. I write to the gov and my reps and say, take it out of the money you spend on illegals.

Well, adding 300,000 jobs in January isn’t exactly the vision of things slowing down.

That would be a 3.6 million dollar increase in the work force if it could be sustained all year.

Don’t forget that January generally has a hard hurdle to get over when holiday jobs are being discontinued. To add 300,000 jobs then is pretty amazing.

I see Democrats criticizing President Trump for the mounting national debt. But think of how they would squeal if he actually could get Congress to cut spending?

Somewhat deceptive. Southern states have large military presence. That gets accumulated into their baskets. Fort Campbell, fort hood, redstone arsenal, ft benning, fort bragg. I don’t know if it’s fair. Most big military bases are where it appears it’s cheaper to operate or in states friendly to operate.

In addition the percentage of minority population plays into it also. Again just an observation.
