Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), who are both running for president, have reportedly said they support reparations for black Americans affected by slavery.
The New York Times reported Thursday that Harris affirmed her support for reparations in a statement after agreeing last week with a radio host that reparations are necessary.
"We have to be honest that people in this country do not start from the same place or have access to the same opportunities," Harris said in the statement. "I’m serious about taking an approach that would change policies and structures and make real investments in black communities."
Warren has also said that she supports reparations, according to the Times, though her campaign declined to provide further details to the newspaper.
The Hill has reached out to both campaigns for comment.
Warren and Harris are both pursuing the Democratic nomination for president in 2020 and the Times noted that previous Democratic presidential candidates have not supported reparations.
Among those who have not backed the policy are former President Obama, 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her Democratic rival that year, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the Times noted. Sanders is running for president again in 2020.

Neither side of my family had anything to do with slavery.
In contrast, Obama’s family were major slave traders. And so, probably, were the families of many other Democrats who are busy playing politics with this issue.
I agree. The people of all races, etc do not realize how lucky they are to live in this country!
To quantify how much slavery has effected 21st century African Americans we would need to compare them to a control population. People who’s ancestors weren’t captured and sold as slaves. Such as the the current population of Africa. I wonder how much “reparations” would end up being if you based them on the difference in standard of living between African Americans and people still living in Africa.
No reparations EVER!
Only REPATRIATION and the sooner the better.
How much are we owed for the assassination of Lincoln? How about the victims of race riots? Do the Ron Goldstein and Nicole Simpson families get exempted? Do we get paid back for affirmative action? Don’t Chinese deserve payments they used to shoot them out West? It’s only been 155 years since slavery, will we do this every 150 years? Im guessing it will be continuing payments for life forever.
Any black Americans who can prove that they were slaves should be entitled to reparations from their slave owners.
Yeah, they would all be dead. If it makes the race mongers happy, we could write out checks to the deceased that they could cash if they ever came back to life.
Otherwise, the billions that have gone down the rat hole of the Great Society, breaking up homes and fostering an entitlement mentality, were all the reparations owed.

Do the Obamas get a check? I guess not but the absurdity of successful African Americans receiving money. The absurdity of anyone receiving money for long ago injustices to their ancestors. What horrible damage is being done to a country that pretty much abolished racism long ago.
I guess the billions that white people have laid out over the years to help lift the minorities out of poverty and obtain the American dream doesn’t count toward that.

The South was laid waste and occupied as punishment for slavery and secession. Not until World War II would another polity be destroyed as thoroughly as was the Confederacy in the Civil War. Its economy was devastated—the South largely did not take part in America’s rapid industrialization and economic expansion in the second half of the 19th century, and was so poverty-ridden that it was essentially a third-world country until fairly recent history. Add all that to the blood of 750,000 Americans. I’d say that debt has been settled.

And just where do they think these reparation funds are going to come from? It’s not growing on trees!
