The Cultural Reichstag Fires
American Spectator ^ | February 21, 2019 | Scott McKay

Remember the Reichstag fire? It was perhaps the seminal event that sealed Germany’s fate as a socialist dictatorship before the Allies were finally able to pry that nation out of the jaws of Nazism in 1945 (although for the eastern portion of the country human dignity and freedom wouldn’t come for another 40-plus years thanks to Soviet imperialism).

If you’re not familiar with that event, the date was February 27, 1933. Adolf Hitler had been sworn in as Germany’s chancellor just four weeks hence, though his Nazi party was in an unstable position at the center of a coalition government holding a small plurality of 32 percent of the seats in the Reichstag — Germany’s parliament under its Weimar Republic. At the time Hitler had an agenda in mind to secure a much larger portion of the Reichstag’s seats in order to create a majority for passing an Enabling Act that would allow him essentially to rule by decree, at an election set for March 5.

By happenstance or contrivance on the part of the Nazis — it’s still a matter for debate — a fire was set in the assembly chamber of the Reichstag building which raged until the structure lay largely in ruins. A 25-year-old Dutch communist with a sketchy history as an arsonist named Marius van der Lubbe was found at the scene and charged with the crime, along with four other communists, as the Nazis used the Reichstag fire as evidence of a communist putsch to overflow the Weimar Republic. As a political weapon, the Reichstag fire was incredibly useful to the Nazis — their representation in the Reichstag grew to 44 percent of the body, giving them a majority of 52 percent...

Something akin to the French Revolution is nigh. I suspect after Trump is reelected we will witness some measure of cultural carnage.

A big one will be coming when the Deep State, Soros and the media and Dems are all ready to start things. Not a chance happening.

The editorial copy ready “We in America knew the dog whistle Trump plans to turn America over to the country rubes by violence would come someday.”

This time the buffoon “Jussie” replacement will not look at the camera pointing the wrong direction and will not pay by check.

Good type for the setup: black, gay, immigrant wearing a Go AOC sweatshirt hoodie holding the hand of a helpless prop adopted child, now the victim of a Trump supporter who is a religious Christian,anti-abortion,NRA member.

Agree.

There will be a Reign of Terror in the Democrat Party - Not-so-good folks against really-bad folks.

The recurring reference to “Nazi” and should be refered as Socialists. No different than Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao, Chavez, and The newly elected congressional Democrats.

Dr. Ghorka asked the question “Do you think there will be a civil war”? My answer is we are in a cold Civil War and the dems are just itching for it to go hot so their friends and Comrades in the media can say “See the Conservatives are the violent one”.
I truly believe in 2020 we are going to see violence from the left that we haven’t seen since the Vietnam protests. This time though we will have to respond.
It is going to get ugly. Especially when Trump wins.

Why, then, were Dachau and Buchenwald created as detention facilities for communists?

The problem in they will falsely accuse you and oppress you

To the point someone will actually do what they falsely accuse you of and then double down on the oppressing you

The want to provokes a reaction

They will fake it happen till the point they make it happen

Strange and confusing little article...

Starts off intimating that the Smollett hoax could have been our Reichstag fire had it bein pulled off, and then at the end he pulls back.

I'll be interested to see the answer, too.

Because the skull cracking communists, aka "International Socialists" were the chief rivals to the skull cracking "National Socialists".

Strange and confusing little article...

I guess he really wanted to talk about the Reichstag fire more than he wanted to talk about anything going on now.

This Smollett thing was such a penny-ante hoax that it doesn't bear comparison to major world events, and such an obvious hoax, that it's idle to speculate about what would have happened if he wasn't exposed.

The guy was incompetent, a small time fraudster and he was eventually going to get caught.

I don’t imagine that Hitler’s violation of the non-aggression pact with the Soviets was well received by all.

What, leftists can’t war with one another?

The left are the same here, around the world and throughout history. Nasty, unstable, tyrannical M-Fers at war with human nature.

The Nazis were leftists, socialists, progressives...demoncrats in hugo boss uniforms

Nope. Like like the mafia and its families, the assorted ideological families of socialism cooperate only when not in strong position to go to war with each other.

Yup. Hitler's nationalism, and a desire for liebensraum for the German people left no room for inferior peoples, no matter their ideology.

The principals are all long dead, so it's unlikely there will be a firm conclusion in the absence of some surprise evidence lurking somewhere, but it's pretty much accepted by most historians that it was a Goering operation. Nikolaus Wachsmann makes the interesting suggestion that Hitler's initial hysteria over the thing was perfectly genuine because Goering didn't tell him for at least 24 hours. After that, the big roundup of political opponents and the opening of the first generation of the camps, all but one of which (Dachau) were run by the SA. The next wave would be all SS.
