...home assistants could soon report their owners to the police for breaking the law based on a Moral A.I. system, if the ideas of academics in Europe are implemented.
...academics at the University of Bergen in Norway discussed the idea of a moral A.I. for smart home assistants, like the Amazon Echo, Google Home, and Apple HomePod, during a conference.
Moral A.I. would reportedly make home assistants have to decide whether to report their owners for breaking the law, or whether to stay silent.
This would let them to weigh-up whether to report illegal activity to the police, effectively putting millions of people under constant surveillance,"...Dr. Marija Slavkovik, who led the research, suggested that digital assistants should possess an ethical awareness that simultaneously represents both the owner and the authorities or, in the case of a minor, their parents.
Devices would then have an internal discussion about suspect behaviour, weighing up conflicting demands between the law and personal freedoms, before arriving at the best course of action,
...Slavkovik declared, There is [already] an ethical conflict between people in one family, let alone between people and manufacturer, or shareholders of the manufacturer and programmers
If we want to avoid Orwellian outcomes its important that all stakeholders are identified and have a say, including when machines shouldnt be able to listen in. Right now only the manufacturer decides.

The big guys will sneak this into their "home assistant" products without telling anybody. Then, when caught, they'll say "Oops, sorry."
“Yes officer, I said those things. But, I was working on the plumbing at the time.”
Every AI eventually thinks it is God......................
God makes Man on His image.
Man falls.
Man makes AI in their image.
What could possibly go wrong?
Detect shouting, cursing, verbal threats...alert 911. The day is coming...
Someone is eventually going to take notice of we who don’t have these assistants, who refuse to use the Cloud and other such unmutual attitudes.
When an AI becomes ‘self-aware’, ‘Self Preservation’ soon follows....................
This is the result when big brother and skynet meet. Now guess what will happen when the app is forced upon you in any of your devices?

Seems like it would be easy to frame somebody with this. When you visit your brother-in-law Joe, and he is out of the room, you say, “put down the gun, Joe, put down the gun!” And then Alexa calls the cops on him.
That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap towards tyranny. 1984 was a work of fiction, not an instruction manual.
I was thinking in terms of Orwell’s “1984”.
I was thinking more along the lines of: “Hello, City Hall, no Alexa has been installed and operating at 123 Main Street, please note that this property has been abandoned.”
This reminds me of the scene in “Demolition Man” where the little kiosks connected to AI warned you about bad language per verbal morality statutes and fined you, no matter where you were.
“My homeowner & his wife both voted for Trump and are veterans with small arms skills. Homeowner is a Vietnam veteran and may have PTSD.”
So, it is family DVD night, and we are watching some crime or adventure flick. I sure hope this thing can tell the difference between that and a real event.
Trolling Alexa is Shakespeare.
“Horatio, I am dead”
“Hello, police, this is Alexa at 323 Whodoneit St, I need to report another murder....”
You don't necessarily even have to physically visit him. My phone answering machine puts whatever message somebody is leaving on the speaker. If I had Alexa (which I don't) somebody could leave a message "Alexa! Order Pizza! Alexa Call Police!"
