More than 300 Venezuelan soldiers have defected in just four days as the country plunges deeper into chaos.
Soldiers who have sought refuge in Colombia since the weekend told the Associated Press that the catalyst for defection was the command from above to keep desperately needed humanitarian aid from their compatriots.
"I was tired of people seeing me as just one more of them," Sgt. Jorge Torres said, referring to President Nicolas Maduro's socialist government. "I'm not."
A high-stakes plan by the Venezuelan opposition to bring humanitarian aid into the country floundered over the weekend when National Guard troops loyal to Maduro refused to let the trucks carrying food and medical supplies cross.
Troops found themselves engaged in violent confrontations with their fellow Venezuelans. Many abandoned their posts and ran for their lives across the border into Colombia, which has become a refuge for the newly homeless, mostly low-ranking soldiers.
Colombian immigration officials said on Tuesday that so far, more than 320 Venezuelan soldiers have defected since the weekend.

I agree and believe that many in the Venezuelan Army are going to side with the people.
I always think of the scene in Doctor Zhivago when the soldiers are marching to the front only to be encouraged to defect by the soldiers coming the other way, once it reaches critical mass, the defections will be overwhelming, and the game will be up.
Yep, she and her socialist Dems picked a bad time to further their socialist garbage here, they look to be the fools that they are.
Send the Cuban Soldiers home, and this will be over pretty quick.
The problem is, the majority of the people still support socialism
The only way socialism could have lasted this long in Venezuela is with majority support. And frankly anyone who hates it likely left the country long ago.

Considering that there are 2 million serving in the military, national guard & police, loyal to the Ven. govt., this is a pitiful number.
We need to stay out.
87% of Venezuelans, per recent poll, want the US to stay out militarily.
Only imbeciles would send our troops to fight there.

I haven’t seen anyone here say we should go in there.
There may be 2 million in the military and national guard etc. but that doesn’t mean they’re loyal to Maduro.
A long journey starts with the first step.
There will be a tipping point. Unfortunately our media sides with Maduro.
The problem is, the majority of the people still support socialism.
This is why I say we should be very careful and stay out of it as much as possible. I know real innocent lives are at stake, but these people wanted socialism and they should get it good and hard. Sometimes one’s highest and best use is to serve as a warning to others.
It needs to be hundreds of thousands. If the want mercy, they had better act fast or the people will have their hides when they finally win their freedom.
The news coming out of Venezuela suggests we are in the last week or two. Maybe the last day or two.
