I am certain the girls were straight A students and were pursuing majors in advanced mathematics, physics or engineering. (sarcasm). More likely they rarely if ever went to classes and spent their time partying. Their being in college was a total waste and sadly prevented some students who would be successfully majoring in advanced mathematics, physics or engineering from attending.

Sigh...

Interesting that you think this is not a big deal...At least 2 students were denied general admission at the “really big school.’ To them More importantly and to the point, 2 women crew candidates were denied. For them, very likely not about admission standards...

The student athletes who lost out, lost SCHOLARSHIP MONEY...

USC is Div 1 Women’s Rowing...with scholarship money averaging $30,000+ with USC tuition and fees averaging $52,000+/year.

That is a huge thing to middle class families and their student athletes who spend years trying to excel in their sport.

Facts are really helpful...

USC athletic programs can afford to BUY talent. How many colleges have bought football championships? They pretend they are amateurs. OU spent how long on suspension for no-show jobs and free cars for it's football team? Is that the point you are trying to make? We're Conservatives. That means the Not Stupids. Try blowing smoke up some other asses.

USC's athletic programs do not provide players with no-show jobs and free cars. The NCAA doesn't like us, and they watch us like hawks, ready to pounce if a college official so much as provides an athlete a free ride to the LA Public Library. But I along with many fans wish USC would, indeed, buy some talent in the form of a winning coach in the tradition of Howard Jones, John McKay and Pete Carroll.

You and I are probably in agreement deploring the drift of Division 1A collegiate athletics away from amateurism. This trend includes game times that are now set according to the whims of broadcast companies, games played on weekdays, which interfere with the college's educational mission, the removal of thousands of seats in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to make way for luxury boxes, and selling the naming rights of the Coliseum to an air transport company.

But USC is still the nation's bowl champion, and has been for nearly a century--and we gained that status through athletic prowess.

And what other college will have them? Maybe they can attend Santa Monica or Pierce (community colleges).

My daughter remebered a “Full House” episode from 1993 where she and hubby were prepared to lie and cheat to get their twins in to a top-notch preschool. She looked it up and sure enough it’s close to what she did in real life.

The single biggest reason these schools accepted these kids was that they came from wealthy families that were willing to pay the full cost — no financial aid and no scholarships — to attend. That’s it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are expressing opinion stated as fact...
If you have had student athletes, you might have a different opinion...I have had student athletes.
Fact: Schools have slots for student athletes. Unless athlete is a walk-on, Division 1 schools offer scholarships. The athletes don’t pay full tuition. See chart: http://www.scholarshipstats.com/rowing.html
Fact: 2 students were denied slot on Crew - or regular admission. For them that is a scandal.
Fact: Parents colluded—sent photo-shopped pics of girls rowing?!?! Parents deducted the bribe off their taxes as charitable contribution?!?!
My opinion?
It was not about the money to the school.
The school admissions office likely just approved the list from the Crew Coach...Coach who was bribed and colluded with the parents and the Key firm. That is the true scandal...And it is a huge one.
The parents were not “dumb.” Their daughters were not smart enough to attend USC, and so parents seeking status symbol for themselves wanted daughters attending status school. And they tried to use bribe as tax deduction...criminal and clever...
I agree with you. People buying access? Not a new thing. I believe the real villains are the university people. Notice how we are not hearing about them.
Agreed. The kid was on a big boat in the Caribbean with the usc president. It’s just the little people taking bribes. Maybe the big fish got tired of the little fish taking bites of their own.
You got it right. They will be mercilessly “laughed at” if they return to school.
This is all overblown imo. These girls didn’t harm anybody. It’s a very big school, and I truly doubt their being let in kept anybody out
That is irrelevant.
I think the college should insist she starts rowing crew.
The Experienced Rowing Parents’ Guide to Rowing
Congratulations on having a child fantastic enough to want to row!! Relatively few young athletes discover and develop a passion for this unique sport. Rowing is not a mainstream sport in this country but one that will set your son or daughter apart and benefit him or her in ways you cannot yet imagine.
You've got to pay the piper someday.
These are all LA locals—who run in similar circles. Daughters were friends...Likley, if they could simply buy access from “university people” or big fish, then the parents would not have needed to go thru the Key Foundation~photo-shop pictures, bribe coach, etc...just a few winks, nods and well-placed calls by the Chairman to low level admissions would have sufficed and kept things on the down-low.
Rick Carusso, the the newly-elected CHAIRMAN (on whose YACHT) his daughter and Loughlin’s daughter were partying) is a local philanthropist and billionaire in his own right—real estate...So I doubt he was bribed and doubt Loughlin could have even afforded a bribe to turn head of a billionaire. As was pointed out in documents, the Key Foundation bribed the Crew coach or coaches, the person(s) with the power to manipulate and game the system with fake athletes. Perhaps someone in the athletic director or admissions office was bribed...perhaps that is what is meant by “university people.”
Interesting possibilities, but I’d love to have a lawyer weigh in on this. Even if the plaintiffs had rock-solid cases on both counts in terms of the facts, how could anyone document that they’ve suffered any actual damages as a result?
Fact: 2 students were denied slot on Crew - or regular admission. For them that is a scandal.
Fact: None of the students who were "denied" slots on the crew team had any legal claim on those slots. Sometimes you don't get a job because another candidate is better, and sometimes you don't get that job because the boss hires a less-qualifies family member instead. Maybe it's not fair, but it's not a "scandal." These are private schools. I honestly don't give a damn about their admission practices.
