REP. ALEXANDRIA Ocasio-Cortez is better known to Americans, but her unfavorable ratings are climbing faster than her favorable marks, a new poll from Gallup found.
The congresswoman from New York, who has a large following on social media, has been a frequent target of Republican attacks and the subject of much media attention, even as she has butted heads with the establishment in her own party.
[ SEE: Political Cartoons on the Democratic Party ] While half of Americans had not heard of or had no opinion of Ocasio-Cortez in September, more than 7 in 10 U.S. adults now know of and have an opinion of her, according to the poll, which was conducted in February.
Of those Americans who know and have an opinion on Ocasio-Cortez, 41 percent have an unfavorable view – up from 26 percent in September. Thirty-one percent of respondents expressed a favorable opinion compared to 24 percent in the earlier survey. That means her net favorability has dipped from -2 percentage points to -10 points.
The only more-recognized member of Congress so early in their term was Hillary Clinton, who had served as first lady before being elected to Congress, according to Gallup.
Republicans have driven the spike in Ocasio-Cortez's unfavorability figures, with 73 percent holding such a view – up 21 points from September. Just 5 percent of GOP respondents reported that they have a favorable view of her, while nearly 6 in 10 Democrats say they like her.
Younger adults and non-whites are also more likely to say they have a favorable idea of Ocasio-Cortez.
