I just ordered a set of Cardiff S1 skates. I usually skate on my inlines with carbon fiber boots, Millmar or Lebada rails, 80mm wheels and ABEC 5 bearing. When I did it on a regular basis, I could cover 5 miles in 20 minutes. I lost a lot of muscle mass burning down from 191 to the current 146 lbs, so I'm expecting some challenges. I can still kick start my Yamaha SR400 or ride the Harley Fat Bob. Hauling 50 lb bags of salt to the basement is something I loathe, but it's necessary for soft water.
The major health issue for me is rheumatoid arthritis. 800 mg of ibuprofen at bed time to knock the pain down to tolerable levels to sleep. I knew it was coming at age 20 in grad school (immunology class). My wife is struggling with diabetes. That disrupts her sleep and mine. We'll both work a few more years to maximize our retirement savings.
Last week I was trying to type up a task for one of my staff in JIRA. On the phone in meeting. Handling 2 different conversations in the Skype IM (texting) and monitoring a system repair in MatterMost (persistent IM). A 3 ring circus. After all of that died down, I had to track down a crash in a Java program. I immunized it against the missing XML elements, but then had to backtrack 2 levels in the system to discover the root cause as a missing JSON name/value pair that misdirected the XML input that I needed. That's why weeks run 55 to 70 hours.
That certainly wasn't a comforting retort from your doctor. Hopefully you get better guidance in the future to stop falling apart. There's time to turn it around.
My wife was dumped by Symantec after transferring all the jobs to India. I can’t provide details on her role, but it was upper level tech. She was among hundreds, if not thousands of others.
Don’t buy into any Symantec product.
I had a chat with someone doing permanent placements for a major staffing firm. I told him my phone has been ringing off the hook with calls from US-based recruiters, but I couldn’t understand the current (local) tech job market.
What he told me was this:
1 - For many tech jobs in the area, we are at zero percent unemployment.
2 - It has become prohibitively painful & prohibitively expensive to pursue guest workers for these openings.
This partially explains what I’m seeing. But, employers are still holding out for the purple squirrel willing to come into the office each day.
“Hispanic American”
Pick one. Enough with the hyphenated bullshit. You don’t make much of a case when you open with identity politics.
I'm sure that one day soon I'll start acting my age, but today is not that day. I'm picking my first employees to fill in behind the old man.
