Brexhaustion: Long, grinding Brexit is stressing people out

LONDON (AP) — Elly Wright can’t sleep through the night.

The Dutch native, who has lived in Britain for 51 years, keeps thinking about the black boots of Nazi soldiers marching by her basement window as they brought Jews to a nearby camp in her homeland. The flashbacks have been triggered by Britain’s heated debate over leaving the European Union, which has brought division, strife and fear of foreigners. The 77-year-old painter says it has shattered her sense of belonging.

″(Britain) is my home,” Wright said quietly. “That is being taken away from me.”

Wright isn’t alone in her angst. The acrimony over Brexit, which has reached fever pitch as deadlines come and go while politicians squabble, is affecting the mental wellbeing of people from Belfast to Brighton.

Job uncertainty. Visa worries. Confrontational conversations between family members or friends with opposing views on Brexit. The fatigue and stress caused by three years of conflict has spawned new terms: Brexhaustion or Strexit.

“It’s a civil war,” said Cary Cooper, a professor of organizational psychology at Manchester Business School. “What the country is going through is not a war with Europe. It’s not us against them. It’s internal.”

Just when some thought a conclusion could be drawn, Britain’s departure was delayed by six months at an emergency EU summit this week. Whether in favor of exit or hoping to stay, the long argument just got longer, and, for many more stressful.

Some have taken note of the trend. Online meditation provider Headspace has added bespoke meditations to help people manage Brexit stress, addressing issues such as having difficult conversations and what to do when you feel overwhelmed.

Wait a minute. If she’s 77 now, that means she was born in 1942 and the war ended in 1945 which means she was at most three years old when Hitler was marching Jews past her basement window. Methinks the lady doth lie through her teeth.

If ever there was proof the global cabal owns and controls governments, this is it. Wear the peasants down until they accept their subjugated position.

Hmmmm, interesting, but, to be fair, I’ve seen cats that bear striking resemblances to Hitler. My apologies to Hitler’s Ghost for comparing him to cats. Nobody’s THAT evil. Maybe somebody can run down to Argentina and get a sample of Hitler’s DNA and compare it to Angela’s.

Makes sense. The uncertainty is the worst.

After Leave won the referendum, there should have bee a second referendum asking people what type of Brexit they wanted, giving simple options: Norway, Ukraine, Canada.

And the British PM should have got boundary lines from parliament agreed before negotiating (as the EU did with 27 parliaments)

And not called for an unnecessary election ij 2017.

Hubris is what has caused Mays chaos. Hubris and sheer incompetence.

It’s not really a spiritual war. You have Christians and Muslims and atheists on both sides.

True. The UK called for a divorce on 29 march 2019 and did nothing to prepare. And then on 22 March begged for a little more time.

Then on 9 April for more time.

Come on UK, if you want to leave, leave already. What a bunch of wankers.

The people were given a choice leave or remain. 52% chose leave. Mays deal was a bad deal but a leave deal it was.

No one bothered to ask the people what type of deal they wanted and in fact before the referendum a no deal was ruled out (Boris, Nigel et al all said the EU would beg the UK for a deal)

If you want leave at any cost then there is Mays deal.or agree to a customs union for Northern Ireland only and you solve the problem.

May’s “deal” was not leave at all. It was leave in name only, all the same as before only now Britain gets no vote at all AND Britain now requires a permission slip from the EU to ever actually leave. That’s the sort of treaty you only sign when you’ve lost a war.

No deal was NOT ruled out before the referendum. That’s just pure BS. What any competent PM would have done was negotiate deals with America and others and then turn around and use that as leverage with the EU. That’s not what May did. She ruled out the one thing that would have given Britain any kind of leverage at all - ie leaving on WTO terms. She needs to go.

Mays deal was the only one in which the UK could honor its promise in the Good Friday agreement unless she opted to put only Northern Ireland in a customs union with he Republic of Ireland

May’s “deal” was nothing short of abject surrender. That was obviously totally unacceptable.

How was it abject surrender?

What does the Brexit deal contain?
The long Withdrawal Agreement (on the terms of the UK’s exit) and shorter Political Declaration (on the future relationship) were the result of nearly two years of negotiations between London and Brussels. The deal was approved by the British government and the other 27 EU countries in November 2018

The legally-binding Withdrawal Agreement would establish a “transition or implementation period” to run after Brexit until the end of 2020, during which many existing arrangements would stay in place.
Although no longer an EU member, the UK would still have to conform to EU rules during this period. The transition can be extended “for up to one or two years”, with a decision taken by mutual consent before July 1, 2020.
Critics of the deal argue that far from taking back control — a key pro-Brexit referendum slogan — the UK would be surrendering it to the EU. It would be outside the EU’s institutions with no formal say over rules it would have to follow.
The advantage, however, it that this avoids a “cliff-edge” Brexit, giving people and businesses time to adapt to the UK outside the EU. It also allows more time to reach a final deal

Regarding the financial obligation the EU made it clear from the outset that it’s about settling the bill for commitments undertaken — and it’s been argued that to renege on these would seriously damage the UK’s international reputation.

The controversial part was tWithdrawal Agreement envisages a “backstop” mechanism to guarantee an open frontier between Northern Ireland in the UK, and EU member the Republic of Ireland. This is seen as necessary given the different tariffs and regulatory standards likely to result from the UK’s decision to leave the EU’s single market and customs union.

Under the deal, the whole of the UK would remain in a “single customs territory” – seen as a temporary customs union – with the EU until at least July 1, 2020. This could be extended or terminated, but only by mutual agreement. Tariff arrangements would be the same as now.
Note mutual consent

The lack of ability to leave the backstop unilaterally has particularly enraged the pro-Brexit camp. They have argued that UK independence is seriously compromised if customs union membership is indefinite.
The British government has said that this would be highly unlikely as neither side would want it. The EU is anxious to stop the UK exploiting backstop arrangements to engage in unfair competition via “back-door” customs union membership

It was not abject surrender in any way but the only way to honor the Good Friday agreement.

Do YOU know of any way to honor the promise that the UK made in the Good Friday agreement and also have England - Wales out of the EU while Ireland remains in the EU?

How was it abject surrender?

“You’ll get the same deal you had before. You’ll still be subject to our dictates. Only now you don’t get a vote. AND you will need a permission slip from us before even thinking about leaving again.”

The only appropriate answer to that is “eff you”.

You keep repeating the statement and not giving any reason for it. Just like someone saying “he is racist” and not giving any reason for it.

The deal was based on northern Ireland not having a hard border with he republic, as the UK agreed, promised in the Good Friday agreement.

Do YOU have any way how the UK could honor its promises and still have England Wales outside the eu while the border was soft and the republic stayed in the EU?

Do you flt-bird have any solution for that?
