Food stamps and online grocery shopping are about to mix

Amazon and Walmart on Thursday kicked off a two-year government pilot program allowing low-income shoppers on government food assistance in New York to shop and pay for their groceries online for the first time. ShopRite will join the two retailers on the program early next week, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The USDA has long required customers using electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, pay for their purchases at the actual time and place of sale. So the move marks the first time SNAP customers can pay for their groceries online. ShopRite and Amazon are providing the service to the New York City area, and Walmart is providing the service online in upstate New York locations. The agency said the pilot will eventually expand to other areas of New York as well as Alabama, Iowa, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington. The pilot program will test both online ordering and payment.

Isn't that special. This taxpayer doesn't have the free money to shop online for overpriced processed foods. Why don't I have that luxury? Because I'm giving it all to lazy scum who don't care.

Wow! That’s just great. Now they won’t have to turn off the TV and wonder what Oprah is saying anymore. They can have their soap operas uninterrupted. Man! The folks living down on the welfare plantation won’t even need a DVR any more!

Ain’t progress progressive?

Food stamps are the modern equivalent of depression era soup lines.

It is probably more accurate to describe food stamps as the scheduled feedings of farm animals; much of our population has become bipedal livestock with food, clothing, and shelter provided by others’ toils.

Like public education, poverty has become a huge pseudo-industry that keeps the Democratic Party in business. They are both massive wealth re-distribution schemes, and the ONLY economy in real sh!tholes.

Don't panic just yet.
According to CNN, the attorney for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says the recommendation is tongue-in-cheek. The organization represents 12,000 physicians who aim to promote plant-based diets and ethical scientific research.

If you really must panic, read the allowable insect parts in, say, flour.

This new twist is hawala-ready.

No need to get into fresh produce, seafood, or drugs, the USDA is going to give the hawala brokers the USDA-Snap cards to get the money transfers going.

Such a deal!

Yes, there’s always been nasties in our food but it’s time we tried to eliminate as much of them as possible, not increase them. The article speaks to increasing the number of chickens processed so there’s less time to notice poo.

My first reaction is disgust. But I actually see an upside to this.

The USDA will then have access to EXACTLY what each person has purchased. This would make it incredibly easy to spot a lot of scams (assuming that we had an honest government that was interested in doing so). Who is buying luxury grocery items? Why is the family that supposedly has infants not buying any baby food?

So many ways that the data can be sliced and diced. So much to learn from it.

The Big Brother companies use that data to spy on us. About time it’s used to track the gimmedats.

And for those who genuinely need and deserve assistance, it could be used to improve their situation and save taxpayer money, too.

The USDA FOOD STAMP program and all of the generations of descendant programs are black holes riddle with fraud and waste.

The CalAggie professors D. Barton DeLoach and Sam Logan wrote about this many decades ago.

Refer to Economic and Policy Weekly, December 30, 1995, page A-159. The article is published as follows: Logan, S H and DB DeLoach (1977): The Food Stamp Programme: Del Norte and Humboldt Counties, California Division of Agricultural Sciences, University of California, Davis, Bulletin 860

So they won’t even get the exercise of pushing a cart around the aisles at Walmart.

Worsening the obesity epidemic and boosting Medicaid costs.
Isn’t that special?

This story PROVES that the SNAP program isn’t really about the poor. It’s a corporate subsidy for BIG FOOD (Kroger, Walmart, Safeway, Giant Eagle, Kraft-Heinz, Tyson, Kellogg’s, ConAgra, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Surely they are the ones who lobbied for this.
