WASHINGTON When it comes to presidential obstruction, at least Watergate started with a crime. A stupid crime, but a crime.
After 675 days, more than 2,800 subpoenas, nearly 500 search warrants, $30 million spent, endless jaw-jaw on cable and countless whiny Trump tweets, we have come down to one fundamental truth.
And its the same truth that has been terrorizing us all along: Donald Trumps dirtbag machinations are driven by insane vanity.
The First Narcissists all-consuming blend of braggadocio and insecurity has turned Washington and its rickety institutions into a dystopian outpost of his id.
President Trump obstructed on nearly every page of Volume II of the Mueller report, even though Robert Mueller was too lost in legalese to throw the book at him. The report counts as the Worst Exoneration Ever, replete with incrimination.
And Trumps motivation for trying to subvert justice and turn the White House into a writhing nest of liars? His ego.
He did not want people to think that the Russians were responsible for his election and that he was an illegitimate president.
And why was this the burr under his sociopathic saddle? Obviously, because he thinks he is an illegitimate president. He never expected to win.
The idea that he is in the Oval Office under false pretenses plays into his twisted sense of victimhood. The spoiled scion of Fifth Avenue somehow always finds a way to be aggrieved, a victim of the media, the deep state, dirty cops, note-taking aides and the elites all out to get him.
Its the same reason he is still talking at rallies about that beautiful map of his Electoral College victory, with its large swaths of red. And the same reason he focuses on ratings and crowd sizes and subscription numbers...

Don't you get the sense there's a man lurking in there, crying to get out?
Come out, Mo.
Bingo. MoDo never got over being duped and dumped by Douglas. Clinton sent him in there to chill her out on Monica deal.
ps
MoDo slept her way to the top. She has no room to judge others.
I guess this is their way of apologizing for over two years of lying, and publishing fake news.
There oughta be a law...

Now at least we have heard openly why the Democrats went after Trump in the firts palce - they just personally don’t like his personality and don’t like him.
Now just being an “egomaniac” (I, personally always saw Obama that way) makes you a target for a hoax with which to have an inside coup by the deep state, and if that does not work then impeachment.
“He did not want people to think that the Russians were responsible for his election”
1. Regardless of whatever the Russians did, the material impact of all they did was miniscule compared to all that both parties at every level, plus the two main compaigns, plus all the political action committees, plus all the other candidates for office, plus the American people independently did. The internal U.S. efforts were gargantuan compared to the pin prick weight of what the Russians did. Thus, the Russians were not “resonsible” for the election.
2. What Trumps key objection to was the Democrats and the intent of the Mueller investigation to portray Trump as in collusion with Russia. That is a nothing burger.
The NYslimes writer presents straw arguments that are not part of Trump’s essential disagreement about what was wrong with the Meuller Investigation.

Pop psychology. "Not expecting to win" doesn't mean "illegitimate." "Lucky" may be closer to the mark. And politics is for people with fight in them, not for people who accept whatever happens. I would say that Trump doesn't feel that he has a party or a base in DC behind him, so he's more combattive than other politicians are. Outsiders are like that.
It may be time for a moratorium on all the "psychopath," "sociopath," "malignant narcissist" talk on both sides. Everybody in politics is a narcissist. Everybody in politics has an overly large ego. Real psychotics, though, are few in politics. Normal people don't go into politics.
If you want to play long-distance psychiatrist and talk crazy you need a benchmark to measure by. Today's is Aaron Schock. I'm not saying he was a psychopath or sociopath or a psychotic or a malignant narcissist, but if a politician isn't a worse head-case than Aaron, he or she isn't any of those things either.
I loathe her column as much as you do but she's an opinion writer, not a reporter. As to objective reporting, sadly it's mostly a thing of the past. Many "reporters" have forgotten objectivity and indulge in opinion in their "news" pages. But in Dowd's case she's paid to write outrageous stuff like this.
Refresh my memory,Mo....wasn't Volume II the one that was written by the dozen or so ILLary donors that Mueller hired for his staff?
Whoa. Maureen Dowd, bitterness does not become you. No wonder Michael Douglas bailed. You are venomous.
Remember what Hillary said? “If this b*stard gets elected, we’ll all hang from nooses.”
Is there a noose with your name on it, Maureen? Makes one wonder.
