Tennessee should say no to year-round daylight saving time (bad circadian rhythms)

**SNIP**

Many workers would then begin their workday in darkness. Worse, young children waiting for the school bus would also be in darkness, creating a potential safety hazard.

Further, this delayed sunrise would impact the body’s circadian rhythms. Shift work has long been known to have negative impacts on health. The delayed winter sunrise would have a similar effect, causing the equivalent of jet lag.

Various scientific bodies have released statements opposing year-round DST and endorsing a return to year-round standard time. The Society for Research on Biological Rhythms has stated that year-round standard time would enhance sleep, increase cardiac health and reduce cancer risk. The European Biological Rhythms Society has stated that year-round standard time will improve work and school performance, reduce weight, and reduce alcohol and tobacco consumption.

There's a 50-50 shot. Pick one. I've never liked the extra hour of daylight - it burns my grass.

Clearly, the clocks are in charge.

Ain’t no circadian rhythm after a head injury.

Much much better 12 years later but my record was about 64 hours awake. Also couldn’t sleep the first few years for more than 15 minutes at a time most of the time.

my problems got a LOT better. Not perfect, but better.

A lot of our vets STILL experience these things and it’s SO HARD to treat.

I guess whatever part of the brain controls the rhythm is damaged.

I had cerebellum, thalamus and brain stem injury.

These soldiers’ injuries are widespread in the brain.

I’d been having problems sleeping for a few years. Maybe get two hours at a time. But now, I free range and nap/sleep regardless of the time. Why else would I be posting at this hour? This is working for me, but then my dog doesn’t mind and there’s no one else I report to. Some nights, I’m up all night, others not.

Oh, cry me a river.
Just move the school hours ahead, then. That’s WAY more intelligent than the retarded idea of shifting time around.

I wonder what caused it. I am sorry because it sucks, I know.

You sound like you just deal with it, as if we had a choice!!

For a while i’ll sleep normal then 3 months later back to a few hours here and there.

Wake up with tremors and incredible headache. Docs say something wrong going on during sleep wake cycle. Had NO IDEA how complex waking up was!!! :)

It makes work tough sometimes but i get enough.

Melatonin does NOTHING.

Did something happen to you at the time it started?

I don’t think I produce melatonin anymore, at least it doesn’t feel like it.

The problem started when I was, maybe, 65. That was ten years ago. I attribute it to aging, as I have seen several studies on “Why Grampa Can’t Sleep,” and speculation that it is an evolutionary behavior to have old folks keep watch while the yutes slept. Yeah, it sounds like a ‘just so’ story to me, too.

Your case sounds horrible. My sympathies go out to you.

Has it never occurred to schools that they could change the start time easier than the nation could change every clock they own twice a year?

I know, both parents have to work, one to feed the family, the other to feed the government.

I think it’s more the constant change that’s the problem, not one or the other.

I think we are of a kind.

There’s nothing we can do about it so why let it get to us?

I got exhausted from the “why me” about 6 years ago :

And the soldiers have things SO MUCH WORSE.

We REALLY need to speed up treatment, though I know the brain is so complex, these guys aren’t old.

40s, 50s, that’s it.

Stop producing melatonin, interesting.

Did you ever try melatonin? I follow the vet brain injury boards and have never heard of it working!

What the body makes and what we try to replace it with are two different things.

Well I enjoy your posts and we shall see each other many hours overnight. :)

DST is retarded. Accept the astronomy of your location or go to where it suits you.

Pretty constant 12 hour days in the tropics.

Longer days further N/S in their summer. Move seasonally.

If you want to play w/clocks instead, why not just say sunrise is 7am and sunset is 6pm. Speed clocks accordingly.

That plan is just as arbitrary and just as retarded.

I agree about the melatonin. And I’m sure we’ll talk again. You are one of my favorite posters, and I look for your name on threads.

Recently retired and now in my early 60s. Currently, I sleep for about 4 - 5 hours then I want to be up. I no longer keep my long-term working schedule (up at 4:30 AM - asleep by 9PM). Just the change in schedule impacted my sleep patterns. Since I no longer need to wake at certain times, I no longer need a solid 7-8 hours. I don't know about melatonin but i never liked the supplements... I felt like I was sleeping while still conscious or something. I never feel rested after taking that gunk.

Regarding the time changes, I always did wake and go to work in the dark. Sunrises make it worth getting up that early.

Ha ha.

I am totally on the side of the later light.

Kids shouldn’t be going to school so early anyway.

And what difference does it make if early workers start in darkness, as otherwise in the winter they’d be ending in darkness? Better to have sunlight for after work and after school activities, no doubt.

Sounds like you’re doing ok. I’m still experimenting with free range sleeping and haven’t settled into a routine. It’s been a month and I’m all over the map.

Whatever.

You live North or South of about 25 degrees latitude and daylight will be shorter in Winter and longer in Summer.

The closer to the poles you are the more exaggerated it is, to the point that above 90 degrees the Sun never sets in Summer and never rises in Winter.

So people have been dealing with this for millennia.
