Indonesia Plans To Move Its Capital Out Of Jakarta, A City That's Sinking

Indonesia has announced plans to build a new capital city as its current capital, Jakarta, struggles with pollution, traffic gridlock — and the fact that the city is sinking.

After a Cabinet meeting on Monday, planning minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said President Joko Widodo has decided to move the capital out of Indonesia's main island, Java.

It's not clear exactly when this will happen, or where the new capital would be located. The idea has been out there for decades, though previous leaders have been unable to accomplish the ambitious plan.

Earlier this month, Widodo secured another term in office, according to independent polling organizations. His challenger also declared victory, and official results have not yet been announced.

"The idea to move the capital city appeared long ago. ... But it has never been decided or discussed in a planned and mature manner," Widodo said before the meeting, according to The Associated Press.

Jakarta faces massive challenges. As the BBC has reported, it's the fastest-sinking city in the world, with almost half of its area below sea level.

"If we look at our models, by 2050 about 95% of North Jakarta will be submerged," Heri Andreas, an expert in Jakarta's land subsidence at the Bandung Institute of Technology, told the broadcaster.

The president was reported to have considered three possible plans for Indonesia's capital. In the first scenario, according to The Jakarta Post, government offices would move to a special zone near the presidential palace to make it easier for officials to move between meetings.

In the second, the capital would be moved to an area in Java near the current one. Java sits on the western edge of Indonesia's archipelago of thousands of islands. It's the country's most populous island.

They better be careful how they handle the move.

They could tip the whole island over if they don’t do it right.

Not as bad as if they move it to Krakatoa, east of Java...

That’s what happens when your country consists of 17,000+ islands.

Jakarta is a huge city (10 million)...
moving it won’t be easy, but I bet they CAN do it if they start now (50 years of politicians talking... no movement on the ground...?)

They blew it. If they had claimed it was sea level rise, President BeatOff would get the US to pay for the move in 2021.

Sounds like President Joko Widodo is all in regarding the Chinese Road. He’ll make millions while subjecting Indonesia to financial ruin, just like it has happened to other countries.

It’s sinking and they have until 2050. AOC says we only have 12 years and Beto says 10 until we’re doomed.

At least the Indonesians recognize this and are not sticking their heads in the sand but are taking APPROPRIATE and responsible action.

I can’t say the same about our approach to New Orleans which is also sinking with large portions of the city already below sea level. Folks need to realize why New Orleans was called the “Crescent City” and not the “Large Bowl Below Sea Level” city. Eventually, the parts of New Orleans that are below sea level will actually be below water. We’ve been spending BILLIONS to delay that inevitability.

New Orleans must also deal with the river shifting course and making a new outlet based on the Atchafalaya to the west of rhe city. The existing Mississippi channel will become mostly a sluggish bayou that deprives New Orleans of most of its economic value as a port.

I don’t really think they will move Japkarta.

They will move most of the national government out of Jakarta and create a new “capital city” for the government.

Likely as they do, some major industry and business interests will make similar moves from Jakarta. Civilians will move initially only as their jobs do, or as they chose - if they can. Even then population may not shrink as fast as Jakarta keeps sinking. Nine chances out ten there will be “relocations” of civilians the government will be required to make for stranded civilians. There will still be a Jakarta, even after it sinks a lot.

Could be worse. The island/city may be sinking but at least it’s not — as Hank Johnson (Leftist-GA) once said of Guam — tipping over.
