Two injured after Boeing 737 skids off Jacksonville runway into water

JACKSONVILLE, FL - A Department of Defense plane from Guantanamo Bay skidded off a runway into shallow water late Friday.

"At approximately 9:40 p.m. today, a Boeing 737 arriving from Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba into Naval Air Station Jacksonville crashed into the St. Johns River at the end of the runway," Naval Air Station Jacksonville said in a statement. "Navy security and emergency response personnel are on the scene and monitoring the situation."

The mayor of Jacksonville, Lenny Curry, earlier tweeted it was a commercial plane, but it was actually a 737 contracted by the Department of Defense. He later said "all lives have been accounted for."

Authorities also said teams were working to control jet fuel which had leaked into the water. The plane skidded off the runway at Naval Air Station Jacksonville.

The FAA says two people received minor injuries.

This is a local story for us. Everyone is accounted for with only two MINOR injuries.

The plane is in VERY shallow water just off the end of runway 9 (east bound) at NAS Jax

The plane was landing in light winds (<6 kts) when a sudden, very brief, thunderstorm passed over the runway from west to east. This was the same direction as the plane was landing. There is speculation, no hard facts, that there may have been a down-burst. This would have caused a sudden lost of lift

Given that there was sudden heavy rain, I think the plane was unable to stop. It certainly wasn't going very fast when it went off the runway.

It was operating under a charter from the Air Force to fly military and dependents around the country.

This happens about once a month. They fly in on Friday evening and back on Sunday evening. It lets the dependents shop for things they can't get at Gitmo.

Saw this ‘home-made’ simulation on YOUTUBE.
This simulation crash is made with x-plane 11 flight simulator [XP11]
THIS IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED, THIS IS ONLY A SIMULATED FLIGHT CRASH OF MIAMI AIR FLIGHT LL293.

Little creepy at end.

Everyone knows that this can’t happen in America. It can only happen when you are dealing with low quality 3rd world pilots.

Yep. It's disheartening. Not a good time for Boeing right now.
