New Jersey Governor Murphy should worry about his own state’s flag, not Mississippi’s
The Star Ledger of Newark ^ | 05.01.19 | Paul Mulshine

Can somebody tell Gov. Phil Murphy that the voters elected him to run the state, not to start another civil war?

Apparently not. Last week, our governor opened up hostilities between New Jersey and Mississippi over the issue of state flags.

One from each of the 50 states flies in Liberty State Park – or did so until Murphy declared Friday that Mississippi’s flag must be removed. It seems that Mississippi’s flag incorporates elements of the Confederate Battle Flag. That’s the flag known mainly for drawing people into long, boring arguments about exactly what it signifies.

Fortunately, we here in New Jersey do not need to engage in these arguments. The Civil War ended 154 years ago. Our side won.

That saves us from having to discuss just what the flags of the various states on the losing side of that war signify. Since it’s my job to figure such things out, I called a couple of my friends who actually care enough about such minutiae to have participated as re-enactors of Civil War battles.

These re-enactors can have endless debates over such thorny questions as the difference between a rifle and a musket. All I know is, you’d have to threaten me with one of them to get me to run around pretending to have been in one of those battles.

To each his own, however. One of them explained to me that if Murphy is trying to purge the country of state flags that contain remnants of the Confederate era, he’s got his work cut out for himself.

It seems the flags of several states, including Alabama and Florida, incorporate that sort of squashed “X” pattern known as a “St. Andrew’s Cross,” that appears on the Confederate battle flag.

Nothing beats VA’s state flag, we have a half-naked woman committing murder on ours.

I dunno. If you've seen the Godfather, you might look differently at New Jersey's flag.

Really? I didn't know that. You guys should pull a Canada, which had a perfectly serviceable flag, and then they decided on ... a Maple Leaf, which signifies pretty much nothing. It probably doesn't offend anyone, though I wouldn't take a bet on that these days. I'm sure somebody is exercised about it, and has a Manifesto all printed up and ready to go.

New Jersey’s Flag has the horse’s head from The Godfather.

Yeah, that maple leaf is really dumb. But Canada has the coolest national hockey team jerseys of any country. LOL.

Have you ever seen our Texas flag that was flown at The Battle of San Jacinto?
(The flag features a bare-breasted woman, as does the paper money of The Texas Republic.)

When asked about the flag (some years later), GEN Houston said that it portrayed what Texicans were “really fighting for” on that historic day of 21APR1836.

Why are there no black people in NJ’s flag? Are liberty and prosperity only for white people? It should not fly in the south.

Didn’t he do this right after Trump’s comment about Robert E. Lee? I guess he couldn’t find anything better to order removed, and had to settle for a state flag among fifty of them in a park.

Good find and suggestion - the The Handschar Division (WWII Bosnian Muslims) uniform right collar emblem that was worn in place of the SS Sig runes worn by Germanic SS divisions.

**Fortunately, we here in New Jersey do not need to engage in these arguments. The Civil War ended 154 years ago. Our side won.**

quite the virtue signaling from dear cousin Mulshine. Except in 1790 New Jersey had 11,423 slaves on census but by 1830 they had double: 22,554 - even after selling as many slaves as they could ‘down south’. NJ participated in the pre- and post- Civil War practice of ‘gradual emancipation’ (a courtesy not offered the South), and of passing laws making it illegal for blacks to move north, or buy land, or do much of anything besides get out. A NJ slave found more than 5 miles from his home by law was flogged and his owner fined. New Jersey’s 1804 law set 25 year terms for slave children but not their parents. In 1846, NJ passed ‘apprentice for life’ laws - a rose by any other name is still a slave, tho.

So while Paul may preach ‘we won’, the facts remain that NJ was as complicit in slavery as any southern state. So what does that say about THEIR flag - maybe the garden state should remove those slave plows from their flag. Or maybe we can forgive a world history of slavetaking, knock off the virtue signaling, and get on with our lives.

The Saltire of Burgundy is from Spain’s flag years ago - Spain had owned Florida and southern Alabama.

The current flag of NJ was the flag of a slave state until nearly 1850; our governor should worry about NJ’s flag.
