AOC confronts drug company CEO over prices, then promotes universal health care

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., attempted to make a case for universal health care on Thursday after a tense confrontation over the HIV prevention drug known as PrEP.

During a congressional hearing, Ocasio-Cortez pressed Gilead Sciences CEO Daniel O'Day on why his company's drug -- Truvada for PrEP -- cost so much more in the United States than in Australia. She later answered her own question on Twitter, saying that the U.S. health care system was to blame.

"Spoiler: Because Australia has universal health care," she tweeted. During the hearing, O'Day responded to Ocasio-Cortez by noting how the drug was under patent in the United States but would be generically available in September of 2020

Ocasio-Cortez, who pointed out Gilead's $3 billion in revenue from the drug, then suggested that people died as a result of the company's pricing.

"There is no reason this should be $2,000 a month," she said of the drug, which is used to prevent HIV infections. "People are dying because of it and there's no forcible reason for it. We own the core intellectual property for it and, as a result, people are dying for no reason."

Why don’t we build a drug manufacturing plant on Guam? AOC would agree that it would balance the island so it don’t tip and sink.

Liberal/leftists royally screwed up vaccine production in the US.

For one thing, vaccines have a huge amount of liability associated with them. Companies just make a business decision and decide not to get involved with them. Why bother? Leftists seem to have this huge blindspot, they think they can change a major variable in a given system, and somehow it won’t have any effect downstream.

“There is no reason this should be $2,000 a month,” she said of the drug, which is used to prevent HIV infections. “People are dying because of it and there’s no forcible reason for it. “

People are dying because they have unprotected gay sex and use second-hand needles to get their fix. They are not dying because an HIV prevention drug was invented, and the inventors actually want to make some money off of their invention. If they can’t make money off of it, why bother financing the expensive lab, experts, and experiments that eventually lead to a life-saving drug.

Nucking Futz
A psychology student at a local university was sent on a field assignment to evaluate three patients in a local mental hospital.

The first patient was locked in his room throwing tennis balls everywhere. The student asked why, and the patient answered “When I get out of here I am going to be a tennis pro.”

The second patient was locked in his room throwing baseballs everywhere. When asked why he said “When I get out of here I am going to be a professional baseball player.”

The student thought he was starting to get the hang of things, until he looked in on the third patient. There locked in the middle of the room was AOC naked, laying face down in a bag of almonds. The student asked, “I understand about the others, but what are you going to be when you get out of here?”

“They’re never going to let me out of here,” AOC said “I’m f÷_<&<g nuts!”

the drug, which is used to prevent HIV infections.

Stopping the spread of HIV is pretty simple, really. If people would stop putting certain parts of their bodies into certain parts of other people's bodies then, ta-da, HIV infections go to near zero in a hurry.

Who's "we?" The people who developed it own it. And they can charge anything they want for it. That's the whole reason they developed it to begin with you dumb donkey.

Would you prefer they had never developed it at all, because it was too expensive to research and market?

Is there a pre-school edition of "Wealth of Nations" or "Road to Serfdom" this idiot can read?

A good dose of Cerfentanil would cure them cheaper.

That and places like SF where people shoot up all the time with needles of unknown origin. I’m willing to bet in many areas, the drug problem is to blame for more HIV cases than intercourse.

I don’t think the previous occupant sold out to anyone. He left all the heavy lifting and real decision making to others and they were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Only rule was...I get to take credit for it, if it’s good, and you take all the blame, if it’s bad.

So, a bunch of unidentified insurance and pharmaceutical company employees, along with Gruber and some other socialist, greedy government bureaucrats came up with the ACA. They all got rich off the taxpayer. Nothing more than extortion, at the end of the day, as we all know.

> Under the PBS, the (Australian) government subsidises the cost of medicine for most medical conditions. So the Australian taxpayers pay the extra cost. > Coupled w/ the govts 'negotiating' ability: "Damn shame. If the price were only $X% lower you sell Y in our country...". Limiting markets, for ANY product, could be a death-knell. Then, some dip-s* (like a few here in FL) think it's a WONDERFUL idea to import these same drugs from , compounding the issue w/ the drug compan(y|ies). No, f* WONDER they try to get as much, as fast, as possible...govt farking w/the markets (again and again and again...), turning things from bad > worse > worst >

She’s so stupid she doesn’t know the difference between profit and revenue.

I spent almost 20 years in biotech/Big Pharma. There are ways to lower drug prices in this country without being a financial burden to patients or the taxpayers. Let’s see if someone listens to reason finally...

You’d be astonished to know how many people don’t.
We live in a massively ignorant society, where half
the country has below average IQ.

Agree with you - Gilead is wonderful. My husband was on a drug for lymphoma that was 8000 per month. Between them and the lymphoma society, we never saw a bill.

The Hep C cure they have is the best of the lot. It would have been over $85,000 for the three months of treatment.

They gave it to this person I know, for free. He’s cured.
