I always thought The Caine Mutiny was a very good book. I don’t think I ever saw the movie.

The film was brilliant. Jose Ferrer did a stellar job, one of his best.

‘I don’t think I ever saw the movie.’

great movie, with the exception of Robert Francis as Ensign Keith; that said, the portrayal (by the great Fred McMurray)of the slimy Kiefer, oily and unctious and utterly despicable, was one for the ages...

I saw the movie on a local TV channel in the 70s not long after reading the book in high school. It was one of those rare times that a movie did the book justice. The ending involving the narrator was a touch different, but over all, it was faithful to the book and brilliantly cast. As others have mentioned, Bogie was superb as was Jose Ferrer. I never imagined Ferrer in the part of the lawyer, but he did a great job with it. Fred MacMurray made a great weaselly Lt. Keefer.

It’s one of my all-time favorite movies and I have the DVD. I’ve watched it many times and I’ve read the book 3 times.

Wouk started the screen play but the director didn’t like it and replaced him.

Several of the actors are older than the characters in the book. For instance, Queeg in the book is 30, but is portrayed by 53 year old Bogart in the movie. I think his performance is excellent, though.

The movie was a mixed bag. Robert Francis was out of his depth playing Willie Keith, but Bogart, Van Johnson and Fred MacMurray were great. They tacked on a Hollywood ending in the movie where Keith goes back under the command of the original Captain. It leaves out the entire story of Willie maturing and Keefer trying to command the Caine.

BTW, anyone here read Marjorie Morningstar? I always thought it was autobiographical about a girl he fell for when he was a young writer.
