The Steele Dossier and the ‘VERIFIED APPLICATION’ That Wasn’t
National Review ^ | 5/18/2019 | ANDREW C. MCCARTHY

Posted on 05/18/2019 9:59:12 PM PDT by bitt

Former officials are fighting over who deserves blame. Here’s what you need to know: In rushing out their assessment of Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, Obama-administration officials chose not to include the risible Steele-dossier allegations that they had put in their “VERIFIED APPLICATION” for warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) because . . . wait for it . . . the allegations weren’t verified.

And now, the officials are squabbling over who pushed the dossier. Why? Because the dossier — a Clinton-campaign opposition-research screed, based on anonymous Russian sources peddling farcical hearsay, compiled by a well-paid foreign operative (former British spy Christopher Steele) — is crumbling by the day.

As I write, we mark the two-year anniversary of Robert Mueller’s appointment to take over the Russiagate probe — which is fast transforming into the Spygate probe. Special Counsel Mueller inherited the investigation seven months after the Obama Justice Department and FBI sought a FISC warrant to monitor former Trump-campaign adviser Carter Page. By then, it was already acknowledged that dossier information was “salacious and unverified,” to quote congressional testimony by former FBI director James Comey.

That was problematic on a number of levels.

If dossier claims were still unverified when Comey testified to Congress in mid 2017 (and thereafter), then those claims could not have been verified when the Obama Justice Department and FBI submitted it to the FISC as a “VERIFIED APPLICATION” in October 2016. It also had to have been unverified on January 6, 2017, when the Obama administration chose to include a sliver of the dossier in the briefing of President-elect Trump — the day after intelligence chiefs met with President Obama in the Oval Office and discussed what Russia information should be shared with the incoming Trump team.

If they are all blaming Comey, I wouldn't describe that as them "turning on each other".

And if it's an organized effort by all the rest of them to put all the blame on Comey, I wouldn't describe that as a "beautiful thing".

Silence is consent, no?

Bigger ?: Where’s the (R)N(C) raining down impeachments vs. this court for one of 2 things: complicity or incompetence via “defrauded”\rubber-stamping

Andrew McCarthy describes John Durham as "excellent."

That is encouraging.

Let’s not forget that the blackmailed rat Justice Roberts is in charge of FISA & is involved with this at some level.

There was no research.

Just really bad fiction writers.

Re: Andrew McCarthy describes John Durham as “excellent.” That is encouraging.

I lost confidence in McCarthy (just on the Russia Hoax) more than a year ago.

He is absolutely a Department of Justice loyalist.

He pretty much refused to criticize Mueller and Rosenstein.

I don't understand how an objective person can look at the DOJ and FBI over the last ten years and not be outraged by their political corruption.

As to John “Bulldog” Durham, I am also not impressed.

He accepted special assignments from Democrat AG Janet Reno and from Obama AG Eric Holder, and not one Democrat objected when Trump nominated Durham for Connecticut U.S. Attorney.

I would, but it could be even MORE beautiful, if it’s only the beginning, and more and more people start turning on each other. Comey is a POS, but not the only POS. I hope he is just the first of many.

He did put two FBI agents in prison - events that were a real black eye for the FBI, and for Mueller. This demonstrates a couple of things - he (1) cares about justice over the FBI’s reputation, and (2) isn’t fazed by Mueller, whose decision to keep 4 innocent people in prison to protect Whitey Bulger resulted in a $100m judgement against the DOJ.

Re: “Bulldog” Durham

I start with the premise that EVERY Democrat personnel decision is infallible.

The last time the Democrats made a major mistake was in 1962, when John Kennedy appointed Byron White to the Supreme Court.

White turned out to be a Centrist, and sometimes Center-Right.

And with rare exceptions - like the Al Franken boob squeezing photo - they totally unite behind any fellow Democrat who is threatened by scandal.

I think you’re 100% right. Comey, IMHO, is/was being treated like a Junior Partner at a big law firm. Did enough to get invited to some parties, was loyal and was willing to take it on the chin for the firm. Was eager to get to the top floor and was willing to do more and more for the bosses. Then one day, he takes it a step or two, too far and the bosses meet and agree that it’s time for him to be cut loose.

We shall see how this all plays out. But, if I’m comey, I’m getting my defense ready and hoping that I have some recorded conversations with certain folks.

I think it’s because this rotation of them has judges that were appointed, mostly, by clinton and the previous occupant of the White House. Obviously not a stretch to think they all hate the President, at the least, and were willing participants of the whole thing.

...Then THEY should swing from nooses just as much as the principal coup plotters

If we lose the integrity of our judges we lose the country
