They won’t necessarily keep you from shooting your ear lobes off.

You apparently forgot that GHWB banned import of some guns. I know ... it was a long time ago.

It’s not something most people think about.

It doesn’t show that President Trump is stupid; just ignorant on this issue.

I can bet if you could speak to him and tell him all those words you just posted, he’d probably agree with you!

It all comes down to informing and educating. Right now, for the majority of Americans, the media has a tight grip on information dissemination.

We need to fight the media power.

There’s another thread about boycotting ATT, as they own CNN. I think a great idea.

No, if I were anti-2A, I’d take away guns specifically to ensure they are defenseless.

And yes, I know they can’t actually silence gunfire so much as make it less audible. Heck, when playing Metal Gear Solid games, I tend to use suppressors and hear a slight “pft” sound.

And I do believe in the 2A, actually. I wouldn’t even be advocating for it for the purpose of self-defense if I weren’t. That doesn’t mean I am for limitless restrictions. Even George Washington put down the Whiskey Rebellion, which DID deal with weapons. Are you going to call him anti-2A there as well? Because by your logic, Washington himself violated the 2A.

Besides, I’m pretty sure you’d agree that what France did with its guns during its French Revolution is NOT good, period. They had guns, thus technically were 2A, yet they used them just to get off on killing people, not to defend against tyrants or self-defense or anything like that, as this article made clear: http://www.culturewars.com/CultureWars/Archives/Fidelity_archives/parricide.html

Three people were murdered a half block from my house five years ago. I decided that if I had to defend my family with my guns, my family shouldn’t have to deal with bleeding out of their ears afterwards. Went through the process and the waiting to legally have a suppressed.45 at my bedside if needed.

Besides, kinda hard to talk with the 911 operator when one’s ears are ringing.

You could say the same thing about any firearm accessory, including optics, slings, bipods. Freedom haters think your “right to defend yourself” isn’t diminished by being limited to single-shot firearms.

“Yes, people have the right to defend themselves from tyrants. The failure of some people to exercise that right properly in the past does not negate the right.”

Never said it did negate that right. But guess what, by your logic, George Washington himself is anti-second amendment precisely because he put down the Whiskey Rebellion, which, last I checked, was an ARMED rebellion.

Heck, if I were to go fully to the extreme on being pro-second amendment as you seem to be advocating, I’d reduce America into a warzone where everyone kills everyone for a sick laugh, hand guns to criminals and law enforcement alike, and telling them to laugh, even encouraging them to kill me as well. You know, similar to the crap Jerome Valeska pulled here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHFwBhZniiQ Heck, just like with the French Revolution, even.

“Suppressors sounds like a euphemism to disguise their purpose.

But I am ignorant on this and curious as to who uses silencers, particularly on handguns, for good purposes?”

Two points here. First of all, suppressor is not a euphemism. It’s a much more accurate term than silencer. Silenced firearms still generate noise somewhere between a nail gun and a jackhammer or ambulance siren depending on the gun.

The proximate most useful purposes are 1) hunting without having to use earpro and 2) saving your hearing if you ever need to discharge a firearm indoors, such as in a self defense shooting.

The guys who hunt feral hogs use them a lot. Feral hog hunting is essentially pest control where semi autos are used and lots of shots are taken at multiple hogs. Suppressors save these guys from tinnitis later in life.

A suppressed pistol may do some hearing damage or may not if fired indoors; an unsuppressed pistol will damage your hearing significantly with 100% certainty if fired indoors. This includes even the lowly 22lr. Some people would prefer to preserve their hearing as well as survive a home invasion.

None of this is relevant, not even a little bit. 2A is a right, not a privilege justified by need. I don’t give a rat’s ass if you like suppressors or not. Live with it, or maybe gun owners like me will stop supporting your conservative causes

There is also a home defense case to be made for suppressors.

You are sitting in your bedroom one night reading when you hear noises coming from your front room. Nobody you know should be there; you grab your shotgun or major caliber pistol and go check out what’s going on. You go down the stairs, down the hall and find signs that uninvited guests are around; broken window, muddy trainer prints, bowled-over furniture. Before you can pull back to a more defensible room and call the police, you see an assailant coming at you from your left. You spin, level your weapon and fire.

Your weapon is unsuppressed. You didn’t put on hearing protection because you did actually need to hear if there were unwanted visitors and where they were. You had to fire in self defense - but now you’ve been at least partially deafened by firing your arm in close quarters.

You can’t hear the partner of the guy you just put down, who slips up behind you and cuts your throat.

A suppressor will quieten down the weapon so you will be able to hear Thug Number Two. Scenarios like this is why the US Marine Corps is looking into making all their weapons suppressed for house to house fighting.

The second amendment says nothing about suppressors.

The second amendment says nothing about guns.

Yes, that's right. "Guns" are not specifically protected by name in the Constitution. I guess it's OK to ban them outright. Right?

The word is "arms". It covers rocks, pointed sticks, knives, swords, axes, lbows, blowguns, pistols, rifles, shotguns, machineguns, suppressors, bombs, rockets, armed vehicles, LASERS, MASERS, phasers, blasters, lightsabers ...

Thanks for the responses.

Like most other FReepers, I interpret the 2A in a way as to give as much individual freedom as possible. For example, some liberals say that the 2A was written to allow the states to have a National Guard. No! The inclusion of the word “people” negates that argument.

But what about the phrase “well-regulated”? Does that not allow for some restrictions? (And yes, I realize that’s a slippery slope.)

I’ve played MGS, and have actually heard some sounds from suppressors, so yes, I do in fact know about them still making sounds. Suppressors, that’s what their names are.

“Not liking” something, and making a blazing attempt to get that something banned altogether, is a mighty long leap.

I “don’t like” loud blasting music, but that does not mean I would attempt to have it banned altogether. It may even be appropriate, in the right venue, but not on the street outside my window at 2 AM.

Most total bans are largely not fully enforceable, anyway.

Congratulations. You have made the most ignorant remark on the thread. GW PUT DOWN A REBELLION. IT WASN'T ABOUT WEAPONS, IT WAS ABOUT NON-PAYMENT OF TAXES!!!!

This discussion is ended. You lost.

Even more good reason. Looks like you’ve convinced me here. As I said, though, Trump having a personal dislike of silencers is NOT the same thing as voicing a desire to ban them. Even my mom’s wary of guns, yet she wouldn’t dream of taking guns away.

Flamethrowers are not federally regulated at all; few states even bother. You can get them mail order or pick up one at some home improvement centers.

(Flamethrowers are actually specialized tools and not exactly useful as a general weapon.)

Now you did it. You said something mildly critical of trump. Here come his troops to abuse you. The true believers around here brook no criticism no matter how mild. Like everyone he does some good and some bad but around here calling out the bad is met with vitriol.
