GOP lawmakers discuss vote to block Trump’s new tariffs on Mexico, in a dramatic act of defiance
Washington Post ^ | June 3, 2019 | Erica Werner , Seung Min Kim, Damian Paletta

Congressional Republicans have begun discussing whether they may have to vote to block President Trump’s planned new tariffs on Mexico, potentially igniting a second standoff this year over Trump’s use of executive powers to circumvent Congress, people familiar with the talks said.

The vote, which would be the GOP’s most dramatic act of defiance since Trump took office, could also have the effect of blocking billions of dollars in border wall funding that the president had announced in February when he declared a national emergency at the southern border, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the talks are private.

Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on Mexico — with which the United States has a free-trade agreement — rely on the president’s declaration of a national emergency at the border. But the law gives Congress the right to override the national emergency determination by passing a resolution of disapproval.

These people are owned. They are beholden to donors when they think they can get away with it

Fake news.

Every GOP member knows such a vote would unelect them.

With certainty.

If democrats reclaim the WH in 2020, the Republican Party will be no more entirely...jmo.

I'd cross the street to avoid Toomey, and your opinion is my opinion. I thank Trump every day for the pending destruction of the GOP. Except for a handful, I have nothing in common with them.

Yet another reason why I’m not a Republican.

+1

The situation makes more sense if I remember that president Trump is truly an independent American president - His campaign was a take over of the republican party using it as a vehicle to enact what he thinks we need to make America awesome now (MAAN???). It turns out most of those ideas are conservative and more jarring for me originalist American.

This tariff thing must really have them nervous (and "they" must be getting nice kickbacks) - the president is challenging conventional wisdom and proving it to be not only disingenuous (that what is called -free trade) but providing an alternative that is also serving the nations interest in other ways. Lots of us are reconsidering how international trade was being done and we came to the conclusion that he was right. We were being ripped off and sold out under the guise of open markets - in reality the elites of nations have been trading favors, slave labor for technology for money, access back and forth for the last 35 years.

Amazing how you see Congress move their asses when it involves donor money.

The corporate donors are calling in there markers.

Way to go GOP gutless RINOs. Remove all leverage from Trump.

Coryn, Thune, Toomey and Ernst.

Ernst - another one who rode the Tea Party but couldn't wait to become a self-serving c**t with a fake smile... like McSally.

Afraid we are the RINOs. The resistance to POTUS and the MAGA agenda IS the GOP.

When Trump leaves office, we are at the mercy of these sons-of-bitches, GOP and Democrat. Enjoy these days, my friend, and dance as fast as you can.

Lord, it would be so nice if that were true and someone had the proof. Amazing that the trial of El Chapo, one of the worlds most notorious drug kingpins, seemed to be so short and received so little attention by the media. Is it true that he talked about all the money he spent on US politicians? the clinton’s? the Dem’s?

I wouldn’t be so proud of being a non-Republican...I’m one of those taking over the Republican party while you virtue signal your virtuosity...give me a break. And, since President Trump ran as a Republican he was smart enough to know that’s what needs doing.

LOL!!

You claim I'm virtue signalling, while you virtue signal by waving your Republican credentials!

It's your post that makes my bolt from the Country Clubbers decades ago the right choice!

You can’t virtue signal anything EXCEPT virtuosity.

If you going to take over the GOP and run it parallel with Trump’s agence, I’ll start donating again. Until then, not. one. thin. dime.
