How suspects in Jennifer Dulos case handed cops their ‘big break’

Jennifer Dulos’ bumbling, estranged husband and his girlfriend handed cops the “big break” in the case — and just in the nick of time, a law enforcement source told The Post on Tuesday.

Fotis Dulos had his cellphone with him and turned on when he and gal pal Michelle Troconis allegedly dumped incriminating items stained with Jennifer’s blood in Hartford, Connecticut, trash cans the night of her disappearance, court papers show.

And the phone pings led cops to discover that the pair had made more than 30 stops to toss the bags while driving on Albany Avenue — allowing detectives to collect crucial evidence in time, the source said.

Many of the discarded trash bags had already been hauled off to the area’s incineration plant by the time authorities learned last week of the pair’s movements, another law enforcement source said.

Police frantically had the incinerator shut down and learned that the sought-after trash collected from Albany Avenue may not have been burned yet, according to the Hartford Courant.

Police cadaver dogs have been scouring a massive mound of garbage there — crushed into fragments no bigger than 6 inches — searching for things such as bone fragments.

“Right now, it’s a mystery where she is,” the first source said of Jennifer. “We don’t have a strong lead.”

My son-in-law’s mother was a good friend of Jennifer. She is heartbroken. Apparently Jennifer was terrified of her ex-husband and didn’t trust him. She moved her kids from Hartford to New Caanan to get away from him. What a sad story. Five kids have now lost both of their parents.

How horrible. I am so sorry for your son-in-law's mother.

I'm in Connecticut... we are hearing about this constantly in the news here, as you can imagine. You are correct, from what I've heard, that Jennifer was terrified of her ex-husband and didn't trust him, and that she moved her kids to get away from him. Just tragic...

A. This sort of crime; a parent killing their entire family,
seems to be happening more often. I don’t know why. Or maybe with the net, the news travels so quickly and effortlessly.
B. She had five children with him, and was scared to death of him? One would presume he wasn’t always like this.

The five children (ages 8-13) include two sets of twins.

As per the divorce documents, he yelled at her and threatened her.

But there’s no mention that he ever physically hurt her (?) before.

She said she feared he would hurt her.

And now he’s proven that she was right all along.

This is so horrible for her, her children and family.

She married him when she was 35 years old, presumably a mature, intelligent woman.

They were married 15 years. That’s a long time to get to know someone.

They had 5 children together. Sounds like a passionate relationship.

How to explain all of this if she was so “terrified” of him?

Perhaps his threatening, aggressive, behavior didn't start until later.Having worked in Emergency Medicine I've seen many women who were abused by their husbands/boyfriends.Quite often alcohol or drugs are the spark that sets it off.

It seems strange that after marrying in her 30’s, some 15 years later she is afraid of him. But people do change. Probably very few change for the better.

Money worries or ambition could have grown in him, like weeds choking off all good. Drugs or alcohol could have resulted in personality changes. Early onset Alzheimer’s. Brain disease. Or the countless snares that Satan might cast.

I personally know several women who fear their former lovers or husbands. One of them told me that every day she isn’t murdered, is to others a sign that her fears are groundless, but it’s like Russian roulette.

This woman didn’t have to die and her children didn’t have to lose their mother. She needed intervention, someone to take her concerns seriously and not discount them because they hadn’t happened yet.

At the very least, he should have been warned that cameras are on in every room and vehicle at all times, so that the chances of getting away with murder approach zero.

And yet, these killers were so incredibly inept, it’s as if they hadn’t a prudent brain cell between them. It’s possible the man simply snapped and had no plans at all.

But potential victims should always have plans and take precautions.

So which is it? Big break or no clue?

Everyone behaves well when first dating or marrying. Most likely, he was charming in the beginning. Then, gradually, his secret side was revealed. (Everyone has a hidden side.) In the beginning, they probably argued like all couples do. Then the arguments became more frequent. His words might not have turned threatening until later.

We can never really know another person, even if we’ve been with that person for a long time. We can pick up on clues. But, even then, we can never know that person’s secret thoughts.
