In this context, “Owner” is just the short form of the proper term “franchise owner.” Similarly, “player” is short for “franchise player.”
Just use the proper terms. If you want to really set things into perspective, refer to players as “contract(ed) franchise players” (aka, “employees”).
By the way, many of these multimillionaire players own businesses. Do they also intend to drop the use of the word “owner” with respect to their role in these businesses? The term “Owner” does convey privilege, possession, authority, leadership, responsibility. Are they prepared to give up this acknowledged status out of sensitivity to the possible hurt feelings of persons (especially POC) who work for them?
What term do they propose as a substitute?
What if the ‘master cylinder’ on their car needed replacement? Will they refuse to use Master Locks on their lockers? What will they do?
