The article is a bit “incomplete”. Helga Brandt was dumped into the pool of Piranhas in “You Only Live Twice”. In The Spy Who Loved Me” the idea was resurrected, but with sharks.
I don’t believe in any of it any more as I believe mortar fire squad. Not to mention many people they said he executed turn out alive and well.
Might turn out they were only ill-tampered sea bass instead of piranhas.

Fatalities from piranha attacks are extremely rare - typically the injuries are minor - but, fatalities DO happen and have been documented. Usually of course, the swimmer / wader just gets out of the water B4 serious injury occurs. But if one was in a tank and the victim could not get out - ok, would YOU volunteer to hop in with several hundred semi-starved red-bellied piranhas?
So, it might take ‘em many hours? So much the worse.

Heck, even bluegill will try to nip at one at swimming spots in lakes. I’ve had it happen many times. They get used to people in the water near them, and get to “thinking” a mole or hair on a leg looks like food...
Obviously, a 5” bluegill’s bite can’t really hurt a human, but then, they don’t have the teeth and bite force, either.
