Trump says no preconditions to talks with Iran; warns war would lead to 'obliteration'

President Trump has expressed his willingness to open talks with Iranian officials without any preconditions – saying that he doesn’t want a war with the Islamic Republic, but if it comes down to an armed conflict it will be “obliteration like you've never seen before.”

In an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Trump said the only line he was drawing in the sand when it came to discussions with Iran was that the country could not have a nuclear weapon.

“I'm not looking for war and if there is, it'll be obliteration like you've never seen before,” Trump said. “But I'm not looking to do that. But you can't have a nuclear weapon. You want to talk? Good. Otherwise you can have a bad economy for the next three years.”

Trump’s interview, which was conducted on Friday, came just hours after he announced on Twitter that he had called off a retaliatory strike on Thursday night following the downing of an unmanned U.S. drone by Iran.

When questioned why he called off the strike at the last minute, Trump said he thought the loss of life that would have occurred in Iran was “not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.”

“I thought about it for a second and I said, ‘You know what? They shot down an unmanned drone, plane, whatever you want to call it. And here we are sitting with 150 dead people that would have taken place probably within a half an hour after I said go ahead,” Trump said. “And I didn't like it. I didn't think it was, I didn’t think it was proportionate.”

I’m good with this. The sh*theads only understand force and the more crippling and devastating it is perceived to be the quicker they will see the light.

President Trump I fully agreed with the proportionate argument, just keep tightening the economic vice!

Thank you for being honest President Trump. What ever needs to be done let it be done.

Spoken like a developer contending with a recalcitrant union. Short. Blunt. Straightforward.

And like a developer he wants to build things not destroy them, he wants all parties to prosper and he wants a clear plan that all agree to with a prompt schedule of activity to gauge progress by.

But as he has always said, “If we can’t work out a deal I’m ready to walk away.” In this case, walking away would be very loud and messy for Iran.

Seems like saying no nukes for Iran is a precondition, but what do I know?

I don’t see where he said that was a precondition for talks.
Can you point out that text?

I and I am sure many others are starting to think he is all talk. The wall, calling off deportations and now this. It’s put up or shut up time.

IF a third term were allowed, he’d have my vote for that, too.

Well, you and many others are thinking wrong.

Actually very few feel this way and none feel this way who understand the difficulty and constrains placed on him by those intent on seeing him fail.

In fact even with these constraints he has done far more than any president before him in our history.

Normally, I’d agree, but better an Islamic ‘Republic’ than a failed state, as demonstrated by Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc.
Face it. We were all better off with Iraq under Saddam Hussein, Libya under Daffy, and Syria under Assad.
The people who actually benefited from these dictators being deposed were NOT our friends.

I know he has done a lot. However, it is the “drastic” measures like the wall and deportations that I am still hoping for.

Trump is brilliant, saying he’ll meet with Iran is just delaying their economic death spiral as they lash out inviting a war to detract their people’s attention from their failed state.

He’s doing the same with Nervous Nancy, saying he will give the Dems two weeks to finally address the border crisis, which they won’t, and he’ll be able to say it when he rounds up the illegal aliens.

I am also but because it has not yet happened doesn’t mean it won’t happen and it certainly doesn’t effect from what he has accomplished against believable resistance.

This what I meant to say.

100%!

It’s discouraging that so many have trouble seeing that. It is extremely obvious.
