John Bird: In light of Iranian aggression, the US Navy must grow in size and capability
fox ^ | 06/24/2019 | John Bird

The recent oil tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman reinforce the need to reestablish a highly visible U.S. naval deterrent in the Middle East.

For eight months last year, no aircraft carrier strike group plied the region, the longest such interruption this millennium. With the United States needing a tougher posture against Iran and confronting renewed challenges in Asia and Europe, several immediate measures and concerted longer-term efforts are critical to ensure America has the carriers it needs.

More warmongering.

I'm not seeing USA having primary interest in protecting shipping.

Where the hell is the un?

Do we really want the UN to have a navy?

Their “Peace Keepers” already have a large share of the human trafficking market. I suppose with a navy they could dominate the piracy market.

My first question was” Who is Joh Bird?”

It says this at the end of the article:

Vice admiral John Bird, USN (ret.), is former commander of U.S. 7th Fleet. He is currently a member of policy projects at the Jewish Institute for National Security of America’s (JINSA) Gemunder Center for Defense and Strategy.”

The UN is useless. The military-industrial complex must be destroyed. We don’t want any more adventures in foreign lands. Let other countries protect their own shipping.

“I’m not seeing USA having primary interest in protecting shipping.

US interests are more indirect than direct. A successful interdiction of 20% of the world’s oil will cause energy prices to skyrocket, which will cause widespread starvation and, possibly disease. Because the world is so connected, those problems won’t take long to appear in their hordes at our southern border and all over Europe. If you think the problem on the southern border is bad now, throw in widespread starvation and communicable disease. Since we don’t have a wall and we won’t shoot people who breach the line in the sand, we will be continually, and mostly successfully invaded. The easiest way to fight this is to ensure that the triggering event, closing the Strait of Hormuz, doesn’t occur.

As for the UN, my dad used to say; “Useless as the tits on a boar.”

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
10h

China gets 91% of its Oil from the Straight, Japan 62%,
& many other countries likewise. So why are we protecting
the shipping lanes for other countries (many years) for zero
compensation. All of these countries should be protecting
their own ships on what has always been....

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
....a dangerous journey. We don’t even need to be there
in that the U.S. has just become (by far) the largest
producer of Energy anywhere in the world! The U.S. request
for Iran is very simple - No Nuclear Weapons and No Further
Sponsoring of Terror!

My question was who is “JINSA”?

The Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) is dedicated to educating Congressional, military and civilian national security decision-makers on American defense and strategic interests, primarily in the Middle East, the cornerstone of which is a robust U.S.-Israeli security cooperation. JINSA believes that a strong American military and national security posture is the best guarantor of peace and the survival of our values and civilization.

I do not favor US military intervention in the Middle East, for any reason, and the idea of Saudi Arabia as an ally makes me want to vomit.

However, our forces are grossly undersized to deal with China, land and sea forces both, and we should start the buildup now.

Of course, with 65% of young men unable to pass a physical and 20% more who can’t pass the AFQT, I’m not sure where those land forces could possibly come from...

He’s calling for more aircraft carriers in the Gulf. With space weapons, drones and other long range platforms for missiles, the carriers are mostly obsolete. They are sitting ducks in an active war zone. Much like battleships in WW2.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he wants a big target for Iran to attack, and if sunk it would make war a certainty.

He is probably also being paid by one or more defense contractors.

Generals/admirals who seek to cash in in this way are despicable. I saw a lot of this in my time in DC, routine corruption.

Possibly...I share your dread of another Mid-East war...And the UN is an open sewer; of no value but endless jawbone...

Then again, it has been the USN that has secured Freedom of Navigation on the world’s oceans for quite some time now, and if our ability to do so is degrading, that will effect our economy and national security eventually...And much of our surface fleet is getting old...New, more capable surface ships will not become more affordable in the future...

If any two-bit regime like Iran can bottle up commerce in a vital commodity like oil in their adjacent waters with no expected response, that virus might become contagious...

Have always believed US strength worldwide depends on naval forces that remain second to none...And our allies the Brits, French, etc as well as affected nations like Japan and Norway might want to pitch in and supply a surface vessel or three...They all depend on free flow of petroleum, supply being fungible worldwide...

Skin in the game, if you will...Plus they can look forward to the gunnery practice on small fast moving targets...Win-win...

Other navies can’t deal with this themselves?

Lets list countries who have a more vested interest in keeping Iran at bay:

France
Germany
Spain
Portugal
Italy
Sweden
Finland

Those countries are closer in proximity and they really should police their own neighborhood

They can always call us and we’ll lead from behind...

Like we did in Libya, because France can’t do dick right...

If you want the U.N. to have a powerful standing Army, you need to rethink your values.

Anyone who wants a major military force coming out of Europe or the U.N., has not been paying attention over the last century.

There’s plenty enough on the table to demonstrate why neither of these entities should have more than a small military.

Yep. Carriers have little protection there - not enough room.

Found this on a quick “look”. Guess he needs to supplement his USN retirement income.
