Many of these have merit. The problem is that they have become a battery of binary tests of ideological purity – allowing Trump to caricature Democrats as extremist.

The Constitution is markedly anti-democratic. For example, the Fifth Amendment says, "No person shall ... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law ...." Even if 99.9% of the people want to murder you and grab your stuff, our anti-majoritarian Constitution forbids it.
A lynch mob is a democracy, and lynch mobs were Democrats.
