Californias governor made history this week when he formally apologized to Native Americans, acknowledging the brutal genocide and war of extermination declared by the states first governor in 1851.
While indigenous people across California welcomed the long overdue statement, many had a similar response: now what?
An apology is great, but what does it look like in terms of moving into action? said Morning Star Gali, a member of the Pit River tribe, in northern California. Were still here. Were still fighting for recognition. Were fighting for the protection of our sacred places. Were fighting for visibility.
Some Native American leaders and activists are now pushing for Governor Gavin Newsoms apology to lead to a serious discussion about reparations for indigenous people.
Echoing the debate in Congress this week about reparations for black Americans, indigenous groups argue that government should compensate Native Americans for harms, some of which continue today. The state of California, indigenous leaders told the Guardian, should be looking at land and water rights, education, cultural revival, criminal justice and more.
Returning stolen land
Violence against Native Americans in California took place much more recently than in older American states on the east coast. In 1850, the state passed a law to remove Native Americans from their lands, separate children from their families, strip people of their cultures and languages, and create a system of indentured servitude, Newsom said.

Conquered. Not stolen.
I agree!
Give Newsome’s house in Sacramento back to the Miwoks!
What next? Give the Spanish language back to Spain? Rename the country of Colombia?
No it’s just in the USA we have all this stuff...
I'm all in favor of giving all the wealthy coastal regions of California and New York back to the Indians and forcing all those wealthy liberals into poverty.
Suits me just fine.
Show me the deed.................
Yo, Chief! Just take your casino and get over it.
So Gavin has issued a formal apology for offenses against American Indians.
So now there could be a movement for reparations for Indians.
Legally speaking, since a government official has issued this apology, does that open us up to lawsuits over reparations?
Reparations for slavery, reparations for Indians, reparations for who else? Will all members of grievance groups line up for their share of reparations? In California, they could easily include reparations for Mexican-Americans and various Asian ethnicities too, if we are going to apologize for all the sins of the past.
Who is going to pay off all these people? Whose money will be used?
The stupid California voters put this criminal into the governorship. Pelosi’s nephew, I think. This state was once great and I have watched it go from GOLDEN to IN THE TOILET.
Democrat destruction by demographic destruction.
The only solution is to turn the entire country over to the descendants of Indians, along with all the money, beg forgiveness, and commit Hara Kiri. That’ll satisfy them. No it won’t!
Listen up. The history of the world consists of one tribe invading another and killing, enslaving, raping and plundering the inhabitants.
There is no way to compensate all the descendants of those who were conquered. No apology is due from people who didn’t do it.
They will continue to use White Guilt to get as much as they can for as long as they can. Blacks, Indians, trans. What next?
I didn’t do it. I give no apology. Don’t try to take my (little) money!
Give them San Francisco. Maybe they can straighten it out.
...and THIS is why white folks should not give ANY voice to ‘reparations’. Get it now?
just my $0.02
you lost to a superior civilization, build a casino, take the money, move on.
Pay them reparations in beads and call it even.
“Conquered. Not stolen.”
Agreed.
To Paraphrase the Kenyan Usurper he-self: “We won. Deal with it.”
Just make sure they're not warped.
All land was stolen at one point or another. How do we figure out who belongs where?
What morons.
The 2010 Census showed that the U.S. population on April 1, 2010, was 308.7 million.
Out of the total U.S. population, 2.9 million people, or 0.9 percent, were American Indian and Alaska Native alone.
It’s time for them to stop whining, jump in the melting pot and join the 21st Century.
They have their own land - essentially their own independent nations - and they haven’t done much at all for themselves with it.
If it wasn’t for petroleum wells and outside capitalists building casinos and cigarette outlets on native American reservations they would have hardly any industry or income at all.
