It was a glorious week, at least for me. For the first time in a long time, I unplugged. I loaded up the family truckster (a rented minivan) and drove back to Michigan to visit family for a week, and I barely checked social media. And, even more rare these days, I mostly used my phone as a device to call people and speak with them. Im tired from having driven about 2000 miles over that week, and 10 hours back home today (with 2 kids, the oldest of which just turned 2, you tend to have to make a few stops), but I also feel relaxed. I highly recommend it.
I know the urge to remain constantly connected, what if I miss something important? You wont. I didnt completely miss all the news and log off, I caught whatever news my dad had on, or other family members, and tweeted occasionally, which was more than enough. Were more than a year away from the next election, between now and then there will be dozens of huge stories that will be game changers. None of them will change the game. Take a break.
If you miss the latest stupid declaration from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, shell make another one. None of them, individually, mean anything. And theyll all be forgotten by the time she makes the next one. Its what she does, its who she is. Its like breathing to her, which shes lucky is a reflex or else shed forget to do it. Between my typing this and you reading, shell have done something else that would embarrass a 10-year-old and everything will be right back to where it started.
All the Democrats running for president will have promised another couple of trillion dollars worth of socialist spending or gone on virtue-signaling tweet-storms that make their last ones seem quaint. You dont always need to see it happen in real time, the next one will be waiting for you and your rolling eyes soon enough.
What wont be waiting for you is yesterday, or last week, or whenever theyre gone forever. John Lennon sang, Life is what happens to you while youre busy making other plans. Take a day, a week, some time to recharge, laugh, swim in your brothers pool, or drink a beer with someone you dont see as often as youd like, or should, and listen to their stories.
I dont mean to go all Marianne Williamson on you, but we have a long fight ahead of us and were all going to need to be able to focus. Plus, as important as politics is, life beats it, and family destroys it.
Its been a week since I checked by Twitter mentions or posted to Facebook and I dont feel like I missed a thing. Its been a week since I read a Trump tweet or heard about which Democrat is surging in the latest poll and fundraising numbers, and I couldnt be cooler with it. Ive barely watched a minute of a random, head-shaking MSNBC or CNN clip of one of their holiday week c-list guest hosts nodding along to a d-list guest who stayed in town for the specific reason of making themselves available in the hope that a producer would give them their shot. Nothing.
Until you step away for a second, you dont realize just how much post-digested food we voluntarily marinate ourselves in on a daily basis. Taking a break is like a shower after a long, hard day of working outside you know youre going to need another one tomorrow, but for that moment, when you step out, its glorious.
Go to a museum, drive to the beach, or dont get out of bed for a day, even if its a weekend day. Binge on a movie series or TV show, because why not?
Its rather difficult to be only casually involved in politics in recent years. People are either oblivious or neck-deep. You cant be a little bit pregnant, in for a penny, in for a pound. Before everyone gets pot-committed in 2020, fold a hand and live a little.
Ferris Bueller had it right when he said, Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. Dont do it, even if you dont go anywhere or do anything at all. Everything will be waiting for you when you get back.
This is true. A break is good - I stayed at a cottage in a state park in Georgia a couple of weeks ago where there was really no internet or even much phone signal available. If you were desperate or there was an emergency, you could go sit on the porch of the ranger station, since they had satellite coverage.
But it was very nice simply being able to focus on the gators and the birds and the nice people I met. I really felt very rested after the weekend. And yes, Occasional Cortex came out with something stupid immediately, so its not like I had to wait long to get annoyed again!
Just sold the house and moving to the country. I’m looking forward to the quiet.

“Going up the country” by Canned Heat
“Going some place where I’ve never been.”
I live in a very quiet neighborhood. The population of our town is 153,205. There is no way that I could live out in the country. I have to have houses around me, even if I don’t visit with my neighbors
Great song, reminds me of my youth.
“Just sold the house and moving to the country. Im looking forward to the quiet.”
We sold our house that sits quietly on the river with sparse population, and moved to a godforsaken PUD with neighboring houses practically squished next to each other. A major interstate is so close I can read the sides of the trucks as they roar by. Every day is hell. I miss the quiet.
Looking forward to planting a garden, working outside, etc. Been thinking about this for two years.
...campaign for President Trump and for state and local representatives who will maintain freedom of the people. (i.e not democrats)

A nice country house, a few good trees, maybe a hill, a stream nearby, lots of birds, a clear view of the open sky.. then they can have their stupid apocalyptic wars.. what would I care..
I have really tried to concentrate on a screen that requires a microscope for my old eyes, especially having conditioned myself to a great, big 17" color monotor for the last (has it been THAT long?) TWENTY YEARS !
Youre going to love it! We moved because of a job change, so we found a slice of heaven, and it’s the most wonderful place! Never knew what a rut we had been in until we moved. Life is good!
Ah, you may leave here, for four days in space,
But when your return, it’s the same old place,
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
Barry McGuire
I’m looking forward to it. Thanks.
I was having a great holiday until that dang earhquake made me turn on the T.V.
I really need to get around to unplugging for an extensive amount of time.
Soon.
Wonder who the ijit is that used a Mercedes crossover as the pic when the guy says right off the bat “minivan”.
Those of us old enough to remember the 20th century realize that actions are more important than disembodied words.
In 1965 the Supreme Court decided in Griswald vs Conn. That contraception was OK. This changed our society’s view of family and sex.
Most of what is said is forgettable and a distraction from that which is important. Without family we are lost.
Suggestion on gardening. Build you some raised beds, meaning about 32" high, not just a border with some dirt chunked in.
You will never regret it. Especially when you get older.
Wait - what? You can call people on those things? Like in the old days?
Damn - what will they think of next?
