Russian nuclear sub crew prevented ‘planetary catastrophe,’ top naval officer says

The crew on a nuclear-powered Russian military submarine prevented a “planetary catastrophe,” according to a top naval officer who spoke at the funeral for the 14 sailors who died during a fire on the vessel.

Captain Sergei Pavlov, an aide to the commander of Russia’s navy, said Sunday the sailors “saved the lives of their colleagues, saved the vessel and prevented a planetary catastrophe.”

Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, said there were no signs the incident could have caused a larger catastrophe. “As for the reactor, there are no problems with that,” he said.

After days of secrecy about the incident, Russia confirmed late last week that the research vessel was nuclear powered, though it has refused to say what type of craft was involved. The Kremlin said that information was “absolutely classified.”

The craft is believed to be part of a secret nuclear-submarine project known as Losharik, according to reports, and was used to target underwater communications and cables. Russia has said the submersible was used to explore the sea bed.

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the nuclear reactor on board had been completely sealed off from the fire.

Is this the one with transmogrification neutralizing deionizer?

No, pretty sure it is the Immodium Q-36 Space Modulator.

If I recall, their most recent threat to the free world was a 100 megaton
warheaded nuclear unmanned submarine drone, meant to drown the
world’s coastlines with mega tsunamis.

Perhaps they changed their minds about letting one of those go off.

Or they may have gotten caught splicing into underwater comm cables, and changed their minds about starting WW3 over the incident.

My paranoid mind says that a rocket carrying a warhead ignited while in tube. Sub crew probably could have let the missile out but elected not to do so.

As weird as it may seem, this sub was involved in cyber warfare. Yes, the so called “cloud” involves undersea cables. This sub was capable of diving to extreme depths.

Putting your two comments together we have the makings of a spy thriller. The sub was involved in cyber warfare and somehow someone it was hacking hacked them back and tried to launch a missile. Or Irianians or North Koreans hacked them to attack us. The crew had a choice of letting the missile go or letting the ship burn up.

In the meantime, as in Dr. Strangelove, a senior Russian Kremlin/ military leader calls his equal in the U.S. to warn them of the missile and convince them it's an accident. Or maybe the explosion already happened and they were calling to find out if it was a U.S. hack, or to warn us about Iranians hacking them to attack us. Either way, Pence is the main point of contact for the official and has to rush back to the White House.

"May those who gave their lives be remembered for their sacrifice.
Like the poor souls who gave their lives at Chernobyl."

Good point.

May they Rest In Peace.

Yeah, whatever.

What about a recombining neutron asymmetric multiphaser to power the binuclesic orgasmatron step up control?

“Planetary catastrophe”, huh? Russian hyperbole more likely.

No, pretty sure it is the Immodium Q-36 Space Modulator.

That would be the Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator.

Though...failure of an Immodium Q-36 Space Modulator could be pretty "explosive"..

All I know is that NASA ended the U.S. space shuttle program after 50% of its shuttle fleet suffered catastrophic failures with a total loss of crew members. The U.S. is now in an ignominious position where we must rely on the Russians to send our astronauts to the International Space Station.

With an embarrassing track record like that, I don’t think we are in a position to criticize any other country over their military hardware failures.

Russians are absolute clods at everything in dealing with nuke technology. From Chernobyl to this and lots of other submarine accidents. The Kursk disaster is a prime example.

It would probably say ‘’devoij’’ which in Russian means ‘’go!’’.

Saved the planet, huh. Good, bring back aerosols:)
Weren’t 10 of the 14 dead pretty high ranking? Sounds like they were eliminated. That many chiefs on a boat died. How many high ranking officers lived?

My paranoid mind says that a rocket carrying a warhead ignited while in tube. Sub crew probably could have let the missile out but elected not to do so.

VERY GOOD deduction. It fits all the parts together.

It explains why Pence returned to Washington -- there was a call on the red Hot Line phone from Moscow.

It explains why they now say the crew prevented a planetary catastrophe. If it was a missile targeted for, say, Los Angeles, then that might have invited a US response. THAT would be a planetary catastrophe. A sub with a bad nuclear reactor spilling fuel, that would not be. We already had Fukushima, and we're all still alive.

What’s your educated guess about what happened?

Interesting that one comment at the funeral provided the reason Pence was recalled to the WH that day. Why doesn’t our government tell us?
