PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- A teenager is being hailed a hero after he died protecting his 5-year-old sister during a home invasion in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummel said 15-year-old Khyler Edman was inside his home on Thursday afternoon when a man, identified as Ryan Cole, broke in, as WFTS reports.

"The suspect broke into his residence, a violent encounter ensued where we believe the teenager was trying to protect the home and protect their younger sibling," Prummel said.

Around the same time of the break-ins, police started receiving 911 calls about an injured man walking the streets.

After a short chase, deputies were able to take Cole into custody. He was treated at the hospital for several stab wounds on his hands and sides.

Deputies canvassing the area later found the door forced open to Khyler's home. When they went inside, they found the teen dead inside and his 5-year-old sister, unharmed.

Cole is being held on charges of burglary and theft, but additional charges are expected.

Not every detail of this story is in yet. But yes, it sure seems like the young man was a true hero. And as for the perp, in a just world he’d be executed in less than a year from now.

I have a very low threshold for people like this.

If he’s found guilty, I hope they find a way to give him the death penalty more than once.

“Cole is being held on charges of burglary and theft, but additional charges are expected.”

I would hope so!
If he did this thing he should have already met his end - at a rope end.
How tragic for the family that such evil come to their door.

“in a just world he’d be executed in less than a year from now.”

I use to be that patient, but now the sooner such an animal is dispatched, the better for everyone. (I mean in instances where no sane person would doubt guilt.)

In a JUSTICE world, the perp would be in the morgue right now, not the young hero.

Now, if this kid had access to a gun, things may have ended quite differently.

In a just AND sane world, the 15 year old hero would have had a shotgun, a rifle or a pistol and would have known how to use them (I did, long before I was 15!) and would have dealt justice to the perp at the scene!

RIP, kid. You done good, but I’m sorry you were not armed and able to defend yourself and your sister more effectively!

Seedy past: Ryan Cole has long criminal history, arrested 20+ times since 2011

https://www.winknews.com/2019/09/27/seedy-past-ryan-cole-has-long-criminal-history/

Ryan Cole, a suspect in the killing of a Port Charlotte teen, has been in trouble with the law since 2011 when he was 19 years old. Since then, the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office has arrested him 20 more times.

The most recent arrest was last month for disturbing the peace and resisting an officer without violence. A Circle K employee in Charlotte County called the sheriff’s office saying Cole was yelling, cursing and trying to fight customers. Judge John Burns found him guilty and sentenced him to probation.

He also served jail time in 2014 and 2015 for battery, theft and trespassing.

WINK News found his Facebook page and notes his last activity seems to be from March. Cole has been in and out of jail five times just this year.

In a news conference Friday, Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said this time, he wants Cole to stay there.

“We are working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to make sure that we provide the best case we can so this individual does not see the light of day again,” he said.

Every death penalty judgement should get 14 days for appeal, then end it....

He’s had several arrests in Port Charlotte this year, including:

February 15 - Trespassing and Resisting an Officer Without Violence

March 13 - Possession of a Controlled Substance Without a Prescription and Possession or Use of Drug Paraphernalia

June 11 - Trespassing and Resisting an Officer Without Violence

June 30 - First Degree Petit Larceny

August 6 - Disorderly Conduct and Resisting an Officer Without Violence

Yup. And look at the scrawny little arms on that poor little hero. He hardly had a chance. Yet he still jumped into the fray to save someone he loved... The very definition of what a hero does, without regard for his own life. We, society, lost a 14-year-old. But it feels like we lost a hundred of them.
