Two white students at the University of Connecticut were arrested Monday after video that showed them shouting racial slurs prompted campus protests, university police told NBC News.
Jarred Mitchell Karal, 21, and Ryan Gilman Mucaj, 21, face charges of ridicule on account of race, color, or creed. They were released with a court date set for Oct. 30 at Rockville Superior Court in Vernon, Connecticut.
Karal and Mucaj’s charges could result in a $50 fine or up to 30 days in jail.
NBC sent emails to the two men Tuesday morning requesting comment but did not immediately hear back.
Campus police learned of the incident from social media footage showing Karal and Mucaj shouting epithets in an apartment complex parking lot, a university spokesperson told NBC News. The men were playing a game that involved yelling vulgar words, university police said, and then started shouting epithets. Karal and Mucaj were walking with a third man, whom police said did not shout epithets and was not charged.

On campus Monday, students marched to demand further action from the university, and they met at a gathering hosted by the campus NAACP chapter to discuss the climate for students of color on campus.

No longer a free country. It says they were playing a game of being vulgar, exactly what young people do in any society. I have a right to call you whatever the hell I want to say whatever the hell words I want. That right comes from God and we have the natural right to defend it. I’m really shocked my country is coming to this.
We have an absolute right to say “offensive” things. We shouldn’t, but that’s based on a good upbringing not on the police state.

They could have gotten away with spitting in their faces because as far as I know it is not illegal to spit on someone’s face.
You can’t legislate politeness. If rudeness (not lewdness) is a crime then we’re gonna need a bigger prison system.
Spitting on someone is considered a simple assault in many states, IIRC.
If spitting in some’s face is not illegal in some states then shouting racial slurs should be also be legal in those states. There are far worse things in the world than racism...but try telling that to racist liberal democrats.
Sounds like the arrest occurred after this became a 'campus protest' issue - so the campus police were probably directed by the administration to do so. In the bigger picture, this is about political correctness run amok, and people looking for 'victims' under every rock.
These 21 year olds were acting incredibly stupidly, and it wouldn't surprise me in the least if they had been drinking. That's not an excuse, but if the 'campus activists' hadn't blown this out of proportion, this could have been handled internally - without public arrests.
Then you have the comments attributed to some student/students that 'it's bad enough we have to contend with racism here everyday..' I highly doubt that UConn is a 'racist' campus/environment, particularly in politically correct Connecticut. That said, there will always be some racism and other divisive prejudices in any society. The best way to deal with it is open dialogue and interactions. The worst way to deal with it is to suppress all free speech and thus sweep whatever underlying factors there are under the rug.
So which races get to decide which words are and arent racist when directed at another race?
They have no intention of ever trying to get to where no race may ridicule any other race.
