Colorado School Suspends 17-Year-Old After She Posted a Non-Threatening Gun Photo With Her Older Brother

She didn't break the law or threaten anybody, but her school still panicked.

A tongue-in-cheek post from a Colorado teen about a trip to a shooting range got her suspended from high school.

On Oct. 11, Endeavor Academy, a public school in Centennial, Colo., suspended 17-year-old senior Alexandria Keyes for five days after she posted a picture of herself and her older brother on the social media app Snapchat. The two are shown holding guns and the photo is captioned, "Me and my legal guardian are going to the gun range to practice gun safety and responsible gun ownership while getting better so we can protect ourselves while also using the First Amendment to practice our Second Amendment."

The picture in question depicts Alexandria and her older brother, an Army veteran, wearing shemaghs (scarves popular in Middle Eastern cultures that are also used by some members of the military) posing in front of a Confederate flag and flipping off the camera while holding guns. In a statement to The Gun Writer, Kelley Moyer, Alexandria's mother, said that the shemagh her daughter wore was a gift from her brother.

Alexandria tells Reason that she never anticipated being suspended for taking the picture.

"Guns are huge in my family, they're normal to us," Alexandria said. It was a big surprise to her and her mother when police showed up at their house to investigate her as a potential threat.

Yeah......... I don't know about that picture. Flipping the bird and all. It's Kolorado? And she's surprised at the backlash? In today's climate?

Yeah........... I don't know............

Interesting. They’re dressed like ragheads with a Confederate flag behind them.

I hope that family sues the teeth out of everyone involved.

On a side note, at 17-years-old, she’s legally a minor.
Why did Reason publish her name?
Unless permission was given by her parent(s) or guardians.

Cute little girl. And those kids did nothing wrong. But I dislike seeing people dressing up like the goat humpers.
But the outcome woulda been the same even if she was wearing a monsanto cap.

We need to Abolish completely the term Qualified Immunity, then SUE ALL of them into Bankruptcy. Let’s see the decisions they make when they are Held Personally Responsible for those decisions, JUST LIKE YOU AND ME!!!

Totally unreasonable.

It’s not as if she posted it on the school’s official webpage.

She posted it on an outside website and it wasn’t threatening anyone.

A lot of people I know who are big into firearms and the second amendment wear shemaghs when they go to outdoor ranges.

1st picture? You’ve got to be some kind of stupid to think that’s OK. There are multiple reasons.

2nd picture? Awesome. More pony tails and guns please.

Hard to know what ‘triggered’ the school officials more? The head coverings? The Confederate Flag? The weapons display? The rude gesture?

I guess it was the guns, but there’s so much to choose from (if your a liberal).

Yep, that top photo looks harmless enough to me...........If that was my kid, she’d lose range time and the keys to the car for a while........as well as her phone....but that’s just me.

That’s a dark-theme photograph. Call it poor judgement on the teen’s part.

Given Colorado’s school violence history, I’m glad that the school responded, even if school arguably overreacted.

I’ve seen SOF wearing them.
I think they’re in the Call of Duty games as well.
It just seems an odd combo of culture.
