In the case of jihadist leaders, they are also the survivors, atop a stack of challengers, of bloody power struggles. Any death at the top means disarray for some period, as the movement figures out who has what it takes to kill or cajole (or force) the submission of all of his rivals. Note that since bin Laden’s death, al Qaeda’s operations have been even lower key than the low ebb before his death.
