Cops say they’ve captured the bully who beat an elderly man in a brutal caught-on-video assault in a Bronx elevator.
Joshua Marrero, 22, was charged Tuesday in the shocking Friday night attack on 67-year-old Rafael Diaz, police said. Chief of Detectives and soon-to-be police commissioner Dermot Shea said tips from the community helped identify the attacker.
Video of the attack shows Marrero walking into the elevator of Diaz’s Southern Blvd. building in Belmont ahead of Diaz about 11 p.m., cops allege. He pushed the button for Diaz’s floor, then, when the doors opened again, hammered him with a sucker punch to the face.
“I went down and his sneaker was in my face the whole time,” Diaz told the Daily News.
Marrero punched Diaz repeatedly as he curled up on the elevator floor, then started frantically wiping down parts of the elevator door with his shirt sleeve, as if he wanted to remove his fingerprints.
Marrero has a lengthy criminal history, including arrests for drug charges, impaired driving, obstructing governmental administration and possessing a forged instrument, sources said.
